@prologic That's another thing I find interesting. He could have simply funded Gab. They love him over there. They too are using a fork of Mastodon I believe, except legally.
So to create his own must be about having total control over it.
@eldersnake Yeah that's exactly right. Gab.social is using Mastodon. The only other thing I know about Gab is they got themselves banned internally at the Mastodon codebase level as a hardcoded ban (_I don't recall why or the details_).
But yeah I agree with you, it _must_ be about having total control. Plus if you're just going to use your "Users" as your "Product" this is a recipe for disaster 🤦♂️

@prologic It was not on a codebase level. Some Mastodon/Fediverse instances still federated with Gab, even after the backlash. It was Gab who decided to remove the federation from their code and "go their own direction" (read "no security updates").
