@fastidious Oh? Hmmm ๐ค Bit sick of all the streaming services you have to have though ๐คฃ
Iโll look it up though, ๐
I think we still have Prime ๐คฎ

@prologic Apple TV+ comes free for a year when you buy a qualifying Apple product, at least in the US. Of course you need an Apple TV (the little puck).\n\nWe have Apple TV+, Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+, Discovery+, and Prime. We do not have cable TV. Since most services allow concurrent streaming, and account profiles, some of them we donโt pay, but share from family. Same for the services we pay, we share them with family too. โบ๏ธ
@fastidious OMFG! ๐ฑ You have 6 streaming media services?! ๐ณ See this is why I've given up on all this streaming nonsense and why I prefer to buy my media content and insert it into my Plex server ๐ -- Plus it has the added benefit of allowing my kids to watch their favorite shows over and over and over again without consuming precious bandwidth ๐คฃ (_Internet in Australia sucks, NBN Co sucks_)

@prologic yes, even if we were to pay for all of them, and add some more like Hulu and YouTube Premium, for example, it would still be cheaper than cable TV.\n\nI own a lot of movies and series, but they are on the cloud. Ten years ago I used to run my own video server (on macOS), and rip all Netflix DVDs (when Netflix was only using DVDs on the mail). Not anymore.
@fastidious

That is insane! This is Cable TV prices in the U.S? ๐ค

I _think_ Cable TV (_Foxtel mostly_) in Australia is _just as bad/expensice__

For me I'd rather pay $150/month for good quality Internet than $150/month for Cable TV ๐คฃ Trouble is with 6 streaming media services and good quality Internet I'd be up for ~$150
+ ~6x~$20
or roughly ~$270/month
๐ณ I'm sorry but Media content just isn't worth that much to me or my family ๐

I have to ask... if you factor in having to have a good quality internet connection that can sustain multiple streams at once (_say you're in a family/household_) plus the total sum of the no. of streaming services you have to have (_because of the disparity of them all_); Is it really cheaper than Cable TV? ๐ค_

@prologic \n> That is insane! This is Cable TV prices in the U.S?\n\nMy mum pays $270 to AT&T. That includes a land line, and Internet (70 Mbps down).\n\nWe pay $105/month for 700Mbps, and land line. We used to pay close to $300/month when we had cable TV.
@fastidious Wow! ๐ณ So I think weโre on 130 for Internet (mostly due to my running a company from home and my pod amongst other services) and I think 10 for Prime totaling 140\n\nIโd go up in Internet to get better quality, bandwidth and latency but not more steaming services ๐\n\nIโm on 100/40 Mbps here but I barely see about 80% of this bandwidth and average around 6/7ms latency

@prologic we stream 4K, and kids play their online games that require super low latency, otherwise you die. ๐คฃ
@prologic You used to be able to (probably still works) VPN to some poor country and get these services cheaper. Family sharing can also save a lot. But considering a lot of these services are not even available in my country without a VPN to begin with and using one might go against their terms of service, while watching it from one of those free online pirate streaming sites is perfectly legal here, with how little I watch and the fact I watch stuff from all of them when I have the time, at this point I just find it far more convenient to use the pirate sites, especially when you have pirate sites that actually have stuff from almost all those services, so they made piracy more convenient than paying. ๐
@thecanine I don't pirate. Maybe if I were to be where you are I would have a different mentality. I am not sure about the quality, or whether or not captioning is available on pirated media. We are way too spoiled with a minimum of HD, but more often than not with 4K. I can't go back. ๐
@fastidious Well I don't even have a 4K monitor, so I'm happy if it's 720p or above.
The the good piracy sites like https://www2.zoechip.com stream from servers where the majority of the content is stored in HD.
I'm not saying I encourage you to switch to using it, but you'd be surprised how many things I was unable to find anywhere else they have, like stuff from Apple TV or just the old stuff the streaming services don't have the rights to stream anymore. ๐

\n> old stuff the streaming services donโt have the rights to stream anymore.\n\nThey are always available for purchasing (via Apple Movies, Amazon Prime Video, or Hulu, to mention a few). My collection of owned media is rather decent. ๐
