iOS lets carriers add WiFi networks that you can’t remove or stop from joining
Well this was a major surprise so I figured I’d share it here to get some eyeballs on it.
Essentially, the latest iOS (16.4 at post time) allows your cellular carrier (via eSIM) to add “managed networks” to your device.
These networks cannot be removed, they cannot have “automatically join” disabled, and they have equal priority with your real, personal networks.
So guess what happens when your neighbors get a wifi/modem combo that blasts a ... ⌘ Read more
Launch HN: OutSail (YC W23) – Wingsails to reduce cargo ship fuel consumption
Hi HN! I’m Joseph, and along with Arpan and Bailey we are the founders of OutSail Shipping ( https://outsailshipping.com/). We’re building a sail the size of a 747 that rolls up into a shipping container. When deployed, it will generate thrust from the wind to reduce the fuel consumption of a cargo ship. An array of these devices will reduce fuel consumption on ships by up to 20%. These sails are easily stowed and ... ⌘ Read more
Ask HN: How are you using GPT to be productive?**
With GPT so hot in the news right now, and seeing lots of impressive demos, I'm curious to know, how are you actively using GPT to be productive in your daily workflow? And what tools are you using in tandem with GPT to make it more effective? Have you written your own tools, or do you use it in tandem with third party tools?
I'd be particularly interested to hear how you use GPT to write or correct code beyond Copilot or asking ChatGPT about code in chat format.
But I'm a ... ⌘ Read more
Jailbreak Chat: A collection of ChatGPT jailbreaks
Created this site two weeks ago to compile some ChatGPT jailbreaks I had created and gradually began to add more from across the internet. Been loving growing the site and tracking the status of new jailbreak prompts.

Tell HN: Do not store any funds in PayPal or use them for anything critical
I know this has been covered over and over, but I always thought there must be more to the story when someones account was permanently banned. Well, it happened to me, one of the most plain and boring consumer users of PayPal ever.
I have used PayPal for over a decade, usually once or twice a month to make small purchases when buying something off Craigslist or Facebook marketplace. I also occasionally use it to split dinner with friends. I don't ... ⌘ Read more
Show HN: Filmbox, physically accurate film emulation, now on Linux and Windows
We released Filmbox two years ago, and it has gotten a great response. It's been used in huge movies like "Everything Everywhere All At Once".
It's been a huge rewrite to get this working on Linux and Windows from our original Mac and Metal code.
We also have some interesting uses of cross-platform Swift + Electron in our plugin manager app, and cross-platform Swift generally in the plugin. Hopefully we can detail that in a blog post at some point.

Tell HN: Firefox Is an awesome browser right now
I was having trouble loading GMail in Chrome. I wasn't sure if it was my spotty internet or the browser acting up so I gave Firefox a shot. And behold! Firefox opened it in a jiffy.
What impressed me most was that it was able to import saved passwords, bookmarks and websites history from Chrome pretty quickly. Previously, I had imported these to Chromium based web browsers (Brave & Edge) but was afraid that it might be an issue for non-Chromium browser like Firefox, but to ... ⌘ Read more
Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?**
I was helping my son learn to write and realized I’ve been holding the pencil wrong when I write. When I changed my grip to match how my son was learning, it was more comfortable. What have you learned that is different and better than something you’ve always done?

Ask HN: Why Is Everything Declining?**
Is anyone else noticing that for several 5 year blocks (pentad) the world just seems to get markedly worse? It's like no body seems to give a shit about anyone except themselves anymore. Whats the cause of this? What's the solution?
A bunch of things I've noticed:
\\\\* Landlords seem extremely greedy and do terrible rent seeking tactics like fees upon fees (250 admin fee to rent here, $75 to apply, $300 non refundable pet deposit, $25 a month pet rent, $12.50 community fee, $15 trash ... ⌘ Read more*
Ask HN: Those making $0/month or less on side projects – Show and tell
Not sure about anyone else, but I enjoy seeing the posts on side projects making money. Often while reading all of the comments I find new products or services I want, so I buy them and contribute further to that hustle's success. But for every hacker making $100 or more per month with their idea, there are hundreds more working hard, making nothing, struggling to get started. Does that describe you? Maybe the community just needs to hear about what yo ... ⌘ Read more
