Ask HN: Is it just me or GPT-4's quality has significantly deteriorated lately?**
It is much faster than before but the quality of its responses is more like a GPT-3.5++. It generates more buggy code, the answers have less depth and analysis to them, and overall it feels much worse than before.
For a while, the GPT-4 on phind.com gave even better results than GPT-4-powered ChatGPT. I could notice the difference in speed of both GPT-4s. Phind's was slower and more accurate. I say "was" because apparently phind is now trying ... ⌘ Read more

Ask HN: Can someone ELI5 transformers and the “Attention is all we need” paper?**
I have zero AI/ML knowledge but Steve Yegge on Medium thinks that the team behind Transformers deserves a Nobel.
Makes me want to better understand this tech.
Edit: thank you for some amazing top level responses and links to valuable content on this subject.

Show HN: Beepberry – a portable e-paper computer for hackers
Hi. I heard HN likes e-paper gadgets so I wanted to share a little side project I’ve been working on with @sqfmi. We’re building Beepberry - a portable e-paper computer for hackers, designed for chatting on Beeper. My day job is running Beeper [0], but I will always have a soft spot for building hardware.
I wanted to create a ‘weekend’ device that would let me stay in touch with friends and family, without the distractions of a full smartphone. I imagined a tiny, hackable e-pap ... ⌘ Read more

Tell HN: We should start to add “ai.txt” as we do for “robots.txt”**
I started to add an ai.txt to my projects. The file is just a basic text file with some useful info about the website like what it is about, when was it published, the author, etc etc.
It can be great if the website somehow ends up in a training dataset (who knows), and it can be super helpful for AI website crawlers, instead of using thousands of tokens to know what your website is about, they can do it with just a few hundred.

Show HN: Tabby – A self-hosted GitHub Copilot
I would like to introduce Tabby, which is a self-hosted alternative to GitHub Copilot that you can integrate into your hardware. While GitHub Copilot has made coding more efficient and less time-consuming by assisting developers with suggestions and completing code, it raises concerns around privacy and security.
Tabby is in its early stages, and we are excited to receive feedback from the community.

					Remembering Bob Lee
I want to draw attention to Bob Lee, a well-respected technologist and prototype hacker, always curious and sharing lots of interesting technical developments. He was a great role model for how Engineers should be respected in an executive capacity as he advanced his career from 'Software' to 'Product'. His efforts contributed to technology used by millions. What happened to him is tragic and wrong; he deserved better. Thank you, I'll miss you 'crazybob'.
