To be clear... Twt.social (_what we're calling this so far, maybe we'll rebrand one day? Who knows? π€·ββοΈ_) will always be free to join and use! To sustain the project of course our business model is centred around providing hosting services and white-label branding. Only a single Pod Owner would pay for a pod, if they choose to, want/need the convenience or don't have the technical capabilities. Otherwise anyone is also free to run their own Pod by running the same software like @etux does over at twt.u53.net π€_
JoinTwt.org is our landing page where we are _trying_ to (cc @antonio) bring everything together for both techies/nerds/geeks/hackers (_whatever you want to call it_) and everyday folk that aren't tech savvy but still want to enjoy participating and getting involved in a social media that doesn't sell them out! Here we have links to easy to read/digest documentation, our Mobile Apps (e.g: Goryon, cc @dooven) and more.
@arnauld Cool... π (_I hope you are using the conversation view... π€_); So Twt.social is the hosting platform we also built where we offer (_currently free, invite-only_) hosted pods just like this one (twtxt.net), eventually we would charge a small fee for Pod Owners to cover costs, pay for developers and maintenance. Our business model would eventually be a small hosted offering (_NOT advertising, etc_)._
@httptest Feesa IMHO should not exceed limited size! twtxt.netβs backend for example by default limits feed fetches to 2MB after which it refuses to fetch that feed anymore
@pbatch I'm so sorry! I _think_ I missed this in my timeline π’ I was just re-pursuingg my mentions and noticed this. So since you're an external user, I need to ask what client you're using? The original spec twtxt.txt was a bit sparse on details, but we at Twt.social the software that powers this pod (_and others_) extended a few things. We created this convention around a Twt's Subject and Replies. Want to know more? π
@felixp7 I'm going to go out on a limb here and say you work for a video game company? π That reminds me... Flipbooks are cool! I'm going to try to sit down with my daughters and teach them how to do this! It's an old art that I _think_ has died off a bit π’
Hey @vain I just saw your [comment](https://nixers.net/Thread-twtxt?pid=21681#) on nixers.net, I _tried_ to reply there but something went wrong and I can't repost my reply π’ So I'll say it here. Just wanted to let you know that yes our primary goal is to remain compatible with the original twtxt.txt spec. We have however extended it a bit though (_we will document this!_). We also offer a hosting service (_for convenience_) at twt.social.
@vain Also if you want an Avatar to show up for you, you need to drop ain /avatar.png ath the root of where you're serving your twtxt.txt file from. e.g: And an another external feed (_external to twtxt.net_) called beyond
@httptest Oh that's okay! The more clients the better I say! π As for some of your other Twts, yeah look you really should support Unicode, I _understand_ (having written a Gopher library and server or two, client, desktop app and web proxy) that it strictly only understands ASCII, but yeah well that doesn't leave a lot of room for things like π
Sorry @vain I guess you want to be called vain after trying out Twtxt a few times, nuking your feed and starting over a few times? π€£ First self_nick, then httptest? π Anyway welcome again!
Hey @self_nick ! π Welcome to the very growing Twtxt community! π€ Can't say I've herad of the twtrd/next client before, but glad to see another fellow Twtxt user π
@slashdot Hmm π€\n\n> Should Colleges Do Admissions Without Standardized Tests?\n\nYes! Yes they damn well should! Why? Because in my humble opinion tehre is no such thing as a "standaredized" anything. You just end up with unnecessary/unwanted bias and unequal opportunity. π
We're about to merge a PR that affects the way the /mentions view works. Previously it would only search the feeds you follow and the local pod's timeline (/discover). Now with this PR it _would_ search pod's entire global feed cache. What this means is that you _could_ see @-mentions from feeds fetched by the pod you are on (_that other users follow_) that you do not follow. What do y'all think? cc @lukem@off_grid_living@felixp7@antonio@kt84@arnauld@etux
@lukem Yeah if youβre still on the feature branch, no worries! I sometime do this, but once in master it requires rewriting public history which is bad π
Hey @etux I missed your last Twt, You're welcome! I'm glad you like it! Question, Is twt.u53.us intending to become a little community of its own or just a single-user pod for yourself? if we can help in any way or you have ideas for improvements let us all know π
@arnauld Ahh yes ! A little JS is used to improve the User eXperience π Iβm glad to hear the web app works with JS turned off though! That was my goal π
Recently we added support for videos that you can upload, share and write a little about. It made sense to also support audio clips too (_think podcast publishing!_) so why not. Here's a test one I did (_please bear in mind I'm not a podcaster! I really suck at podcasting! I have crappy hardware and I don't like the sound of my own voice!_) with Audacity on my iMac. π
@lukem Of course! itβs absolutely silly that in 2020 merge tools still canβt get the most basic merge conflicts that have identical changes right! π³
@lukem Oh that's now even Github's fault! (_I don't thini!_) The default merge tools used in git are well umm just stupid. This happens more frequently than I can care to admit, and I've never really found a good merge tool that does it better? π’
@lukem You mean, they have an outage? Damn better get my 2 outstanding PRs reviewed and merged π cc @dooven (_when you can!_) ;) Thank goodness I also run my own Gitea instance and mirror everything (_well most my projects are mirroed_) there too!
@arnauld And by the wayβ¦ The reason we havenβt built such a feature yet is because to do it properly we would have to build a clever way of identifying that you actually own the other feeds! Does that make sense?
@arnauld we donβt have a feature for this on the backend yetβ¦ But for now I could merge them for you and synchronize them manually if you would like? would this just be a one time thing or do you want them to be synchronized all the time?
@arnauld Thereβs no reason you canβt have both! At some point will also support custom domains. And yes you could merge both feeds no worries at all π
Hi @arnauld I have to apologise! I'm a bit silly, I actually didn't realise you were an external user/profile! Apparently we've built twtxt.net so well that I can't even tell the difference between local users on a Pod (_like the one I'm posting from_) os external users just hosting a twtxt.txt file somewhere. The simple fact is the Avatar you have is _actually_ automagically discovered by this software / platform. In any case welcome! πββοΈ π·
@arnauld No worries! I like your avatar, very nice π Don't forget you can also set a small what we call a "Tagline" about yourself if you want! Hope you enjoy using this platform! Let me know if you need any help! π€
Okay okay, find on a more serious note its nothing to do with signal strength and _actually_ communication with the Google/Apple contract tracing API(s); rather its more to do with the flawed assumptions of "contract tracing" via Bluetooth LE in the first place, Wow so glad we wasted a few Billion dollars on all this! π³
@arnauld I'm sorry,I'm not very good with French, but we hope this won't just be your "beginnings" but you'll grow to love this community as we continue to improve the software behind it and nurture the friendships and discussions we all have here!
@slashdot Oh geeez wouldn't it be nice to have a small slice of that investment for Twt.social ? I mean seriously?! π³ We built a decentralised social media platform that supports short-form (Twts) and long-form (Twt Blogs), Photos, Videos and Audio (podcasts) all on a $0 budget. Man Silicon Valley is a bit coo coo! π¦
@lukem Seriously if you read his responses, he basically just sounds like an "asshole", sorry but there's no colour, no cheer not even the slightest bit of positivity in his words. Just bluntness. So yeah I agree with you! π
when you go hire a skip bin to throw out a bunch of trash in and around your home, and your next-door neighbor goes and throws stuff into your skip bin without even so much as asking you, what do you think?! π±
@lukem@dilbert Haha! I'm one of those "stubborn" types, only because a) I prefer the more effective measure of "stay the hell away from anyone and everyone!" and b) Masks aren't really that effective at preventing the spread of air-borne pathogens, at beast they _might_ prevent someone sneezing all of you (_maybe!_) π -- O wore one once at my local Physio when things were a bit heightened... Have you? Did you notice how much harder it was to breath?! π³
A good friend of mine and former CTO is hiring over at https://www.metrika.co/careers/ if you're interested! Cool place to work, they're working on some pretty cool things! π
@slashdot Anyone got a better photo of this so-called "XB-1" supersonic passenger jet? Sometimes I feel journalists have lost their touch (_or really haven't caught up with modern social media!_)
This is the only time I will take the "micky" out of myself and not take the _one and only_ Abuse Report seriously. It has to be tested for effectiveness! π€£ π· -- Thankfully it works quite well! π Hopefully (_one can only hope_) I don't have to deal with too many of these on this pod (twtxt.net) and hopefully the decentralised design means other Pod Owners don't have to deal with this type of thing very often either! π€
