@birb I personally like in person organic growth over advertising on other social media sites or platforms that profit off the date or that theyโre useless generate ๐คฃ call it my sense of morality ๐ that being said though I welcome come and support any effortโs That you make!
@deadguy Yes it's all possible. We haven't built this support yet, but it is something I want to do! Do you have any experience writing Go? If so we would love the contributions! The way I was thinking of this working is to extend the command-line client we have today (twt) into both a traditional Twtxt client that mutates a local twtxt.txt file but also knows how to connect to a Twt.social pod. The expected workflow would be an (_optionaly_) occasional twt login and twt sync. What do you think?
This means if you follow any of those feeds (_mostly RSS/Atom feeds as it's an RSS/Atom to Twtxt aggregator_) then you won't see any update from there until I restore that later this evening (AEST).
Amazing... I moved this pod to a DO VM temporarily while the storm blows over! Sorry but I wasn't able to move the fully managed Twt.social pods we also maintain on behalf of others. Just this one. Hopefully we'll get some funding soon and redo all the infra ๐
@birb \nhow did you work that out? There have been more than 600 Twts on this pod ๐ if you follow the @stats bot I believe weโre well over the 4000 mark since itโs launched back in August
@slashdot of course deleting your Facebook account forfeit any oculus VR games you already purchased! Iโm willing to bet good money that the fine print in terms and conditions state that youโre not actually purchasing the game but merely a subscription to the game ๐ then again does anyone read those complicated multi page terms and conditions?! ๐คฃ
๐ฃ FYI just for your information everyone, I might have to power down my infrastructure again today because the Bureau of meteorology is predicting another massive storm over the area and I cannot risk losing any of my server infrastructure to power surge well lightning strikes!\n\nSo this pod and the other Twt.social pods we maintain and harvest may be down for a couple of hours today.\n\niโll give you all a warning ahead of time before I decide to power down.\n\nThanks for your understanding and patience!
@birb Hah! ๐ very well put. coincidentally the reason I built this new social media platform because I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion and expression (respecting each other not being abusive harassing or getting involved in illegal activities etc. etc.)
@deadguy there isnโt a way to import an existing feed yet, except manually which I can do if you want. But I will file an issue because this has come up a number of times and I think itโs a useful feature to add! ๐
@birb Thatโs right I run this from a small mini data enter at home for a number of reasons. Cloud is too costly and we donโt have any funding or revenue ye.
@prologic@eveningwear@kt84@tknz As a result of the two storms we've had that were bad enough for me to power down (_do not want to risk power surges or nearby lightning_); I'm considering either a) purchasing and adding a UPS to my Server Room / Rack or b) Migrating twtxt.net and twt.social to DigitalOcean or Vultr.
๐ฃ SEV1: Apologies once again folks. We had a ~2.5hr outage on this pod (twtxt.net) and all Twt.social pods (sorry @eveningwear@kt84 and @tknz). Root Cause: decision to power down infra due to severe storms in the area. Started: 2.48pm AEST Restored: 5.24pm AEST Duration: ~2.5hrs.
@prologic Can't risk a power surge through the grid. I'm making the decision to power down my infra again for an hour or two until the storm blows over. Sorry y'all! I plan to get a UPS and Surge protector soon, storm season where I live is crazy! ๐ณ
@birb-friend@birb The same reason all of us are here! We want to social media that is open, decentralized, privacy focused that doesnโt sell you out to advertises. ๐
@birb I run currently all Twt.social pods (_the ones we manage_) out of my home infrastructure (_some server gear_), including this pod twtxt.net -- I don't actually know how many users a single Pod could support, but Twt.social just like the original twtxt spec which it is based on is designed to be decentralised. That means _we hope_ users could actually join other pods over time, even ones we don't manage like twt.u53.us. Twtxt.net is the first inaugural pod, not the only one
@slashdot note to self; the ethical and political differences across the globe cannot be overseen by a single organization that hopes to oversee the rulings of a centralized social media platform such as Facebook.
@birb initial launch back in Aug 2020, about two weekends. In total where we have an API, a fully managed hosting platform, mobile app, etc; About ~3 months; but really about ~18 months worth of engineering time (_thanks to folks like @antonio@dooven and others..._)
@off_grid_living The phone should make a cooking sound through its speakers as a sound effect. Maybe make sure you turn the volume up a little bit on the sound effects ๐
