Proper two-app multitasking? _Finally_.
App Library _in the Dock_? I think that might solve my âI want to open an arbitrary second app on this screen without a keyboardâ problem.
Man, these maps sure are detailed. Itâs like one could have a car navigate around with all this information.
âYouâll hear irrelevant, personalized musicâŚâ wait, what?
Live Text? I could use that occasionally.
Focus changes: useful for people who let themselves get inundated with junk notifications like whatâs trending on Reddit. Me? Eh.

I wonder how much use 𧎠(abacus) gets. I think thereâs a page that describes emoji usage, but Iâd need to look it up.
There are three ninja emojis in this post.
And now I sit myself down to a pleasant afternoon of nervously wondering how similar liquid-at-room-temperature coconut oil is to coconut-derived MCT oil.
I put my mouse on my Mac on the right side for reasons. My Windows machine always has the mouse on the right. Wanted to go Back on my Mac andâŚpressed mouse4, just like Iâd do on Windows. Muscle-memory prompts areâŚinteresting.
I wrote âI donât think price exists.â in a text document and predicted that later on I would be totally and utterly mystified what I meant by it originally. Turns out, that prediction was entirely correct.
One of the problems with trying to get to inbox zero is that some of the older messages deserve to be saved but donât really belong in any kind of final resting placeâŚ
@niplav Re: Liber Augmen: Not a whole lot of it is new to me either, but I thought the method of delivery (a single page full of short descriptions of things) is super interesting as a mindspace-delivery device
@niplav I like it, but you probably shouldnât take only my word for it. I suspect itâs piggybacking a lot off of how much I liked its SNES predecessor and know/like the vibe of * Mana games. Also, the last three JRPGs Iâve played were Dragonâs Dogma, NieR:Automata, andâŚChrono Trigger. I donât know whatâs good and new in JRPGs ever since Square left Nintendo. Iâm just glad theyâre back.*
Been playing Trials of Mana on the weekend, but for some reason Iâve been humming music from Secret of Mana during the rest of the week.
@niplav Re: ⌠< sharing ontologies: Thereâs an idea. If I want to write something, _anything_, documenting the words and concepts I use isnât the dumbest idea.
That said, I wouldnât buy orange-blossom water just to dump into my tea. Itâs much more useful as a cheesecake-batter addition, but in order to draw it down in a timely fashion Iâd have to bake two cheesecakes a week.
Discovery of the day: if you have some extra orange-blossom water lying around that you want to use up before it goes bad, you could do worse than to splash some in your cup of black tea.

@niplav âadrationalismâ is probably better. âirrationalismâ sounds like a pie-appreciation club for math nerds.
I love it when an app comes together
According to my fish history, the previous post was not the first one of mine that started with âIn case you were wonderingâŚâ and Iâm not sure how to feel about that.
In case you were wondering, taking a couple pairs of damp shorts fresh from the washing machine into a room and pointing a fan at them will raise the roomâs humidity.
@niplav I wouldnât disagree with your characterization of people whoâre interested in radical life extension, but their messaging, generally, seems to not mention âadding life to your yearsâ at all. âLive to be 150â doesnât sound all that great if youâre going to have 15 years of being in your 80s, so to speak.
@niplav yeah, normal signatures suck, too. Iâm just not convinced the change in tradeoffs is worth it. Oh, and no, it didnât come off as too mean.
@niplav I sign a lot less stuff these days now that my phone can pretend to be a credit card. Also: an impostor with a quantum computer canât pretend to sign documents on my behalfâŚ
@niplav Seems like most of the (radical) life extension people are interested in adding years to their lives, but agnostic about adding life to their years. âBe old longerâ doesnât appeal to a lot of people.

@niplav Re: not guaranteed to see it: I wouldnât have bothered waving hi across the Internet if I hadnât gotten bored one day and grepped my webserver logs for twtxt users.
Never thought Iâd want a 6K monitor, but Iâm running VS Code and it sure would be nice to have a little bit more width. The proper layout for the task Iâve been doing is four editors wide, plus some more space on the left for a file picker.
@niplav Re: rats: YOU ARE NOT ALONE
Did a 20-minute meditation session. Didnât achieve enlightenment, but I managed to think up the kernel of a moderately interesting blog post.
Sure, you can make a bunch of predictions at the beginning of the year and calculate the Brier score for last yearâs predictions, but all you need to do to feel that kind of cloud-dispelling mental work is this: go pants shopping, think of how good youâll be at losing fat in light of all your previous new-year fat-loss attempts, and choose between pants with a 34âł inseam and pants with a 35âł inseam.
In case youâre reading my twtxt.txt file directly or are otherwise paying close attention to tweet dates, itâs absolutely true: I havenât been funny in two months.
pls send help iâm using micro in visual studio code on windows and ^e and ^q are being gobbled up by vscode and i canât quit
When you take stretch breaks every hour itâs a good idea to get up and step away from the keyboard. It is less obvious what you should do when the stretch-break notification comes and youâve been using a standing desk the entire time.
And by âiOSâ, I meant âiPadOSâ. Scribble (the handwriting recognition) is good enough to be interesting, but none of the other features called to me.
In case you had any doubts, iOS 14 was shipped according to the hardware release schedule, not according to when the P1 bug count got to a tolerably-low level.
@hjertnes There was. New watches and non-pro iPads.
Wait, removing the power adapter from Apple Watch? How do you charge the thing? Someone elseâs Qi charger?
Apple Watch and iPad today. OK, one out of two ainât bad.
It works better if you start up its database first.

Bought some new pants and washed them. Theyâre hang-dry only, so I took them into my bedroom and pointed a fan at them to hurry the process along. Several hours later, my bedroom still smells like new pants.

@mdosch Oh wow. I thought Apple was the only org out there shipping zsh by default. What was their rationale for not defaulting to bash?
Unexpectedly amusing: my 24-line .zsh_history. (chsh is near the end.)
@mdosch Right. I can only last about 15â25 minutes in a 80°C sauna. An ambient temperature of 90°F (32°C) is also unpleasant, but not nearly as bad. Iâll use my iPad indoors when itâs 90°F during the peak of the heat of the day, but I wouldnât want to take it into a 90°C sauna.
@mdosch Iâm American. All I know about 90°C is that itâs a reasonable sauna temperature; the literature tends to focus on saunas at 80°C and 100°C. I havenât been in a sauna in _months_, and my body misses it.
iPads under moderate load (streaming video) get surprisingly warm to the touch when ambient is 90°.
Second achievement of the hour: Ulysses Inbox Zero.
I want to like https://amp.rs/, but both its color schemes look horribad on a 256-color terminal (the most Terminal.app supports). The only terminal I have installed that supports lots of colors isâŚVisual Studio Code.
Intrusive bad idea of the day: installing the iPadOS beta so I can use Scribble.
Woke up after six hours of uneasy dreams and thought âat least I havenât been transformed into a giant bug.â
Are we back? Probably not forever and ever, but weâre back for now.
Bumpy ride in the webhosting universe, here. Hang on, folks.
Previous best: plugging a USB foot switch into the iPad to make it turn the page.
Best setup yet: Books on iPad with voice control on; typing notes in a text editor on a separate device. Say âswipe leftâ to turn the page, with no command-tabbing needed.
@johanbove I canât listen to podcasts and contribute to open source at the same time.
I brushed my hand against my laptopâs touchpad at the wrong time, in the wrong way, and moved some icon around in the Dock but didnât catch which. I had to stare at the icons and try and figure out which one was out of place immediately because I hate having perma-pinned Dock icons in the wrong place
Of all the updates in todayâs brew update && brew upgrade
, the last one I expected was an update to a game originally implemented in the late â70s. And yet, GOFAI/dungeon is now at 4.1.
My USB power brick says to cycle the charge in it every so often, so I had it keep my iPad powered up away from any outlet. Fully drained it and plugged it in to a powered-off computer to recharge. Overnight, itâs only rechargedâŚhalfway. Didnât expect the recharge to be this slow.
Imagine the world when we have old, gray-bearded Millenials managing old legacy JavaScript-based systems. They shall sing âDen-o! The last dinosaurâŚâ when griping about them. Their younger co-workers will not understand.
Surprise of the day: the âyou sent an e-mailâ sound in Outlook for iOS really benefits from a decent amount of stereo separation. Kind of a pity that its separatedness will kind of be like an easter egg.
Today, Iâm enjoying how Iâm not craving cheesecake, unlike yesterday.

@lahvak Maybe the exact answer is, like, something divided by 7.
