we're gonna go for gold holo vinyl i happen to have for the spine, obviously
ordering an english-latin parallel text new testament. i wonder what is the most entertainingly inappropriate scrapbook paper i could use to cover it
realizing i want to learn latin scribal abbreviations
realizing i don't want a cipher script for latin, i want someone to come up with a semi-plausible mapping of characters from the voynich manuscript
realizing i don't want a conlang, i just want a cipher script for latin
if i were my boyfriend i would break up with me if i keep talking so much about how soft dog is but she is SO SOFT
it's fascinating how anxious a certain kind of person gets when they are exposed to anything approximating the sentiment in "whitey on the moon".
i guess "human history" is the wrong word here since definitionally most of it is prehistory
"complicated social dynamic involving interconnected civilization with more than a billion people" "you know this could be explained by the context of a human living their entire life together with only the 40 or so people in their extended family"
i don't think evopsych people acknowledge enough how few others a human would have interacted with over all of human history
seattle now's episode about the workers protesting the state vaccine mandate is like.... enrage
dog is as soft as rabbit. how is that possible
or, what, avoid saying those names like "the manager of the so-and-so team" is Voldemort? ruuuuuude
this sucks especially with names where not everyone has recorded the pronunciation somewhere I can access, and pronunciations differ according to regional origins on a continent I've never been to. so then the options are act real casual about however i'm mangling someone's name (not ok) or interrupt a discussion for the quick question that others that person even when asked in good faith (not ok).
you know how you can write "(sp?)" in text? i want a hand signal i can use to communicate when speaking aloud that i don't have confidence in my pronunciation of a word and if wrong would like to be corrected.
if i wanted to create a system to detect leaked documents i would omit unique patterns of commas. people suck at using commas
i can't move the cute dog has her head on my leg help
high quality journalism here on elephant dot com
update: just after writing, a second little woof
ordered skeleton kigurumi "to match the dog's halloween costume"
does anyone have an example of emoji design they like that doesn't rely on contrast between skin tone and dark lineart? i'm sure some exists
we have heard exactly one little woof out of her
emoji should have stayed blobs, and you should have been able to opt between yellow and dark blue for display
hecuba is here!!! she is very quiet and confused but well behaved. she likes attention but we're still learning what makes her nervous. she hasn't yet calmed down enough to eat, but since she's drinking water and we have the exact kibble she'd had at home, we're just gonna let her set her own pace on that
yes a lot of people snarking about "corporate art style" is just misunderstandings of How Capitalism, but I gotta admit I don't trust illustrators with those small-headed figures in their personal portfolios in the year of our lord twenty twenty one
file this toot under the same crotchety category as "you don't own a domain, you rent it, and if you don't understand why the distinction matters you have too much money to get to have opinions"
I guess it's fine to pitch the "permalink means PERMA" ideology or w/e but it's weird that this is front-page linked
stuff like https://indieweb.org/permalink might be getting in the way of people grokking what's cool about the indieweb. "oh, wow, I can take on the responsibility of pain-in-the-ass organization and redirects to maintain something for the convenience of others?" said....who? not the vibe of the fun/experimentation that the indieweb enables.
Friendly reminder that when discussing environmental impact you often run into apples-to-oranges comparisons. The strength and light weight of plastic containers may reduce carbon emissions in transport, but their lifecycle involves health-impacting chemical pollution. Even when carbon emission lifecycles can be estimated, that isn't a number you can line up for comparison against, e.g., the cancers of folks in the countries where that plastic ends up burned. Resist simplifying these issues.
no spoilers but i'm working on something...that i like
but this is the cost of science
update: this seems.... stronger than real baby foot. i am slightly concerned for my toots
they have $4 baby foot at target. i'm testing it out for you, the people
do you ever get weird little hybrid fragments hanging around in your mind that you can't explain? "eyyyy sexy lady" from gangnam style but it's "hey peptobismol"
if u don't have any work to do it's a lot easier to do laundry
this is how they will end up figuring out a way to sell me climate pledge soylent
sending cards in the mail is good and fun
oh look, I'm irritated by this Again
tooning out the news: boomer vtubing? (gen x? w/e)
"When Rashid emailed Spring to object that zeta is a common mathematical term, the company's legal team replied: "We completely understand your concerns about our keyword block. As you are aware, Zeta is a letter of the Greek Alphabet. The Greek alphabet is currently protected legally by the Affinity Client Services. Due to this ownership and the takedowns we have received, we must police our platform for content using 'Zeta.'"" https://www.theregister.com/2021/09/01/data_scientists_riemann_zeta_function/
I wonder whether the English language tutoring they're talking about would need Dari or Pashto or something
one downside of being able to block/mute blowhards really easily is that i lose the opportunity they afford to reflect on how i should myself not speak so confidently even when i "feel sure"
at some point I am going to run across someone else using the anatomical heart emoji as their site's favicon and i'm going to feel very irrationally sad
points at butterfly is this a virtue ethics
I just have this suspicion that you can't have a society without a certain disposition in your citizens cultivated through teeth grinding smiling at Meryl who doesn't know how to shut up about her hedge care issues
it is scary easy for me to only interact with A) people from my job, B) people I care about deeply, and C) people whose interaction with me involves self selection in incredibly niche ways
I have this theory that there is a particular level of social interaction people don't have enough of in our society anymore and one of the reasons it is important and that it is dying is that it involves people who aren't fond of each other having to be polite
it's the last day of august and i'm getting halloween decor ads AND THEY SAY TARGETED ADVERTISING DOESN'T WORK
i want a webring of .land sites
i wonder where i should sit for wfh once she's here. maybe on the bed?
i went and read that piece "the new puritans" in the atlantic for you so you can know without reading it was not valuable / worth the time
since heloise passed the chunk of my brain that was constantly worrying about her comfort has just been turning over like an engine that won't start. "dog? .....dog?" at first i thought it was just sort of residual stress/trauma but then i remembered how similar even being away from her for three months one time had been. working thesis is that i just need dog.
going to get dog on 9/11!!!!!!!!
tonight's tech twiddling has been really successful! I found a Russian midi page from 2003 so maya.land/goblin/ and maya.land/russian/ now have their own gramophone tunes. still gotta figure out how to make the img into a button tho. also got further than anticipated in my experiment with....uh...how would you put it.... keyhash macpaint generative nonsense.
I don't think it's lip injections because young women who get them don't have it, and I also see men with fillers and thin lips get it
you know how older people who get a lot of fillers often end up having a super prominent space-between-upper-lip-and-nose? what is that supposed to be correcting?
how is the hypercore protocol stuff this good already and yet i have heard of no outcry over, idk, illegal content
oh my god beaker browser will just render markdown as html by default this is. ....... magic??
just downloaded beaker browser and ???? holy ??? shit ????? this is the coolest tech ??? and yet no one seems to be using it?????????????????
i wonder if you could hack together something xanadu-ish on top of git and shove the necessary metadata into the commit messages
we should all go easier on teenagers (including our memories of our teenage selves) because being "cool" is all about Not Caring and being a teenager is all about caring Way Too Much and Trying Really Hard so of *course* whatevertok is going to be incredibly cringey just like superwholock or whatever in the past, it's a bunch of fifteen year olds being really wound up about stuff
feeling my way out here, I'm gonna guess that late Halloween season is most appropriate for horror, and November for the ancestors and Shakespeare and all that.... but what of Early Halloween
"but November isn't in Halloween season" Halloween is about the dead, the dead are allocated all of November, q.e.d. Halloween season
ok folks the pumpkin spice latte is at sbux and i believe in following the seasonal markers endemic to my location and culture and tragedy of tragedies, this is it. so! how does Early Halloween Season (pre equinox) differ from Late Halloween Season (post equinox, before 10/31) or Bonus Halloween Season (november)
aghahghgahghhahhgahghhahg i haaaaaaaaaaaate my job
i don't care if having to include a MIDI-to-WAV program in the JS of my website makes it heavier. maybe you all should have thought of that before you took the equivalent functionality out of the browsers >:(
i want you all to know i am NOT making the midi player i'm adding to my website autoplay but i COULD and i WANT to
like if barbara hanawalt was willing to analyze thousands of medieval english coroner's records in order to put together a picture of people's lives and the rhythm of the year, that *seems* like it'd hold up well, but I don't want to read the book if I'm just going to be absorbing conclusions shown false by later, idk, statistical analysis of tax something somethings
thing i wish existed: if you find a scholarly book from the e.g. 80s, a way to quickly discover if it's still read/assigned/thought well of, if its claims have been substantially overturned by later work, and what later work might supplant it
