@tknz / @iggi New pod creation is ready. just shoot me an email so we can send you an invite code π π
@rob Hey! π Got time for me to call you today and help you sort out this IE11+ mess π ?
@hjertnes I'm embarrassed to say I also wrote a lot of PHP back in the day π³
@hjertnes (re PHP) I've _always_ thought of it as and called it "Personal Hacking Project" π€£
@felixp7 (re plain-text file) You're welcome!
@news @antonio (re Cluster migration) _Technically_ yes. It has the exact same structure, runs on the same cluster and has the same supporting infra around it. So yes.
π£ ANN: Introducing the first _alpha_ version of fully managed, 1-click hosted pods twt.social; of the same software that backs twtxt.net π This means you can now request a pod of your own and get your own yourname.twt.social
for yourself, your family or community. Please get in touch if you'd like to have one today! Please Note: This is very early alpha and we invite all alpha testers to join! π€ Check it out! https://twt.social/
@felixp7(re plain-text file) To be fair, this platform is backed by plain text files π€£ I can recover the first first twts you posted if you want them merged back in? :)
@felixp7 (re-following you) Don't worry, just keeping twt'ing π€£ We're actually getting pretty good with per-pod discovery already and we will soon also make intra-pod discovery work nicely too! π€
@felixp7 (re Avatar) yeah caching is quite hard to get right and somehow we still haven't really solved that I guess even though we've attempted to do so multiple times now :/ It _does_ work but either the client's browser caches the auto-generated avatar (_identicon_) or cloudflare is being silly or both? Not sure we'll keep improving things! π
@felixp7 Welcome back! Sorry about the experience! I'm working on it! The pod was under resource pressure and git killed a few times. I've since mitigated that. As for your "account data" I won't easily be able to recover that; however I _noticed_ you were using txtnish
client. You _should_ be able to "import" your following list from that client into here by following [/import[(https://twtxt.net/import). LMK if I can help further!
@Felix Fortunately this isn't a bug. I just discovered the backend had OOMed (_Out of Memory_) a few times. I will probably spend tonight (_late my time, AEST_) redoing the infra a bit ti improve this. Again sorry! Meanwhile I've bumped up the memory of the backing VMs and increased the quote/limit of the service a bit.
@Felix Also one of the things we plan on doing with the "Hosted Pods" offering is allowing users to move around pods if they wish. So you can basically take your feed and all your data with you. We're still working on all this, and I just finished building the 1-click Hosted Pods feature today!
@Felix Oh dear; You _might_ have found an unexpected bug. that's okay! We'll squish it! π Since I'm the pod operator of this particular pod, let me go rename your felixp7
feed temporarily and let you re-create your account. Make a twt and MLK when you're done and I'll merge the twtxt.txt
file back? Sorry about this! π’
@tknz @iggi Hey there! π Thanks for all the help s far! π If you'd like to participate in our very early "alpha" hosted pods, just shoot me an email at prologic at shortcircuit dot net dot au
and we'll get you in! Just give me till at least the end of this weekend to get everything all nicely polishes and proper! We only just finished building this feature just today! π (cc @antonio @dooven)
@felixp7 Hey! π Welcome! I noticed you joined our little pod here, but now I can't see your profile anymore π’ Your feed is still there (_we don't delete feeds_); Did you perhaps accidentally (_or otherwise_) delete your account? Did you change usernames or something? LMK :) Hope you see this! π€
@rob Argg that's so frustrating. I'm running IE 11+ in a VM and cannot reproduce what you're seeing :/ I'll call you later and we'll try to fix this ok! π So sorry π’
π΄ G'night Netizens! π₯±
@lukem (Surface Duo) π² What a hefty price for such an underpowered piece of hardware! How does Microsoft make any money off of these things anyway?
@lucidiot Assuming the C/C++ _actually_ has any legit "English" words in it! π€£
@freemor (re feed closing) May I ask why? π€
For those of you who haven't started following my @home_datacenter feed yet, I encourage you to (_especially if you are technically minded!_); Please let me know what you'd like to see once I'm done describing the setup and components involved! π If you have any q's hit me up!
@lukem Good Morning! π What are the specs and price tag? (_curious but not enough to go look myself!_)
@hjertnes (re HTMl preview of twtxt) donβt worry Iβll add your Git integration soon! π
@rob I cannot reproduce any of the alleged IE issues you are facing (_formatting, uploading media, etc_). Can you try clearing your browser's cache or hitting SHIFT+F5
? I'm not sure what's going on π’
@hjertnes (re HTMl preview of twtxt) And you wonder why I built this π€£
@hjertnes (aboutfeeds) Probably a Mobile Web bug?
@hacker_news (re aboutfeeds.com Oh my! π± What A horrible inaccessible site with really poor contrasting choice of colors! Iβll have to get in touch and get him to fix this immediately! π
@rob Hey! I think you need to fix your account and follow a few folks π€£
@hjertnes Like I said... If Mozilla started asking for donations from the general public whether or not they actually use any of my Mozillaβs products, I would totally support them and donate every single year just like I do for the Wikipedia foundation! We all need to collectively continue to support open standards and an open Web! π #openweb
@tim (re love the UI) Thanks! We're thrilled you like it so far! (_we have updates coming/planned for even better experience!_) -- Re your Avatar; its just a "cache" problem we've struggled to solve; but I do see it at least already! π€·ββοΈ Maybe your particular browser is being silly? π€£
@tim Hello! π Welcome to twtxt.net π€ -- To answer your question, you _would_ have to read my Blog Posts on this! π -- However the short of it that twtxt.net and _thus_ the software/platform behind it actually uses the _very same_ twtxt spec. Almost nothing there has changed. Think of this as a convenient frontend! π Now.. That being said we _will_ also very soon be offering a fully hosted managed 1-click offering where anyone can spin up their own version of this! π
@71m Hello! π Welcome back to the ever growing twtxt community π Glad to have you back!
Looks like this Twtxt Pod _may_ in fact reach >1M hits this month!
π² #twtxt
In my spare time (_what little of it there is!_) I do Archery (_traditional barebow recurve_) πΉ π· You would not believe Iβm π¨βπ¦― π€£ #archery
Our dog when he was just a wee pup! Isnβt he cute?! ππΆπ· #dog #dogpics
@antonio (re Twt edits) Yeah I get that. So _thinking_ here based on my experience adding new features to and fixing bugs for @quite's twet a while back; If you build a cache client-side (_look at the implementation on twtxt.net for how this is done, maybe I should document it at https://dev.twtxt.net ?_); if you sent me the CacheLastModified
timestamp we could compare that with the backend API's CacheLastModified
timestamp too right?_
@antonio (re Twt edits) Yes. This is one reason why the Web Interface doesn't behave like this, it just shows the last N twts and allows you to pages through them. Perhaps the Mobile App can do this too? As you scroll down past the last item it'll just add a ?p=N
to the API call?
Yes the Mozilla thing is a bit of a worry. I worry about the Open Web too; but from a "technical" perspective I _believe_ it can never be destroyed. Fundamentally I'm not convinced you can really centralise or control something that isn't really a tangible thing, "Internet". But I would support Mozilla too; just like I support Wikipedia every year.
@johanbove (re using twtxt.net without an account) No that doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. How would it know how to identify you so you can "manipulate" your feed? Is there an issue with having to have an account? Do you want support for say OAuth/OpenID or IndieAuth or something?
@hjertnes But I'm too lazy π What's the point of a Twtxt platform if I can't read about something here π€£
@eli_oat (last paragraph re mozilla layoff) can you quote it here? :)
My 5yr old daughter built this a few weeks ago π Isnβt it amazing? π€
@hjertnes (tiktok tracking) You do realize I was being facetious right? π I _know_ very well why large tech companies do this, especially on large social media platforms like Facebookβ’, Twitterβ’, TikTokβ’, etc π
@antonio I see on your last Twt you had actually _edited_ it. I _know_ this because it was in position X in my timeline, then when I got back home from the shops it was in position Y above my reply to you π€£ Interesting side-effect of "Editing" your last Twt π€ We really should get this issue done soon to limit the impact of this behaviour that _could_ throw users off if they are unaware! π
@kt84 Which one? The local cafΓ© or the petrol station?! π€£
@antonio (re Federation) I _think_... There are two choices here; a) We do some kind of WebMention "think" (_haven't looked into this too closely yet..._) b) Some kind of "Web Hook" pushes to other pods or c) A "poll" based approach that is basically just a special type of feed between pods. I kind of personally like the simplicity of the later (c) as it means anyone can just periodically check for new followers by just say curl
(ing) the feed. OTOH it _might_ be better to do some WebMention/WebHook thing in a simple way?
Beat local CafΓ© β Cafe Bliss, Kenmore Village
@antonio (re Federation) Yeah that could work for sure !
Only Petrol Station in Australia that fills up your car for you! #customerservice π€
π‘ In other news... I'm _thinking_ π€ about how we will build out so-called "Federation" features between twtxt.net pods, and ultimately a network of them. My current set of ideas is to build notifications of "User A on Pod X mentioned User B on Pod Y" and "User A on Pod X started following User B on Pod Y" as twtxt feeds themselves that are "polled" periodically. This has the benefit of allowing _anyone_ or _anything_ to also implement the same features, but the downside of not being "real-time". Thoughts? π
Hello @andrewm4894 ! π Welcome to twtxt.net π€ So happy for you to join our growing community of twtxters π if you need any help don't hesitate to tag me @prologic or @support in a Twt (_post_). Check out /feeds for interesting users, local and external feeds you _might_ be interested in!
Good Morning Twters π€ π₯±
@lukem (re HR recruitment industry) Yeah I can sympathise with that. π’ Makes one feel like a _cheap_ contractor sometimes, I've found over the years (_even worse_) is you don't even get a "look in" if you don't keep your CV / RΓ©sumΓ© up-to-date with all the latest "buzzwords" and "marketing hype". I wish I was joking. π±
@eli_oat (re twt.social) https://twt.social is coming soonβ’ π -- This is part ofthis issue -- Our plan is to have 1-click, fully managed pods (_just sub-domains for now_) with invite-only codes for alpha/beta testers. I plan to get this going this weekend. Interested? π€
@antonio Good Morning! π Will you use a Markdown renderer? You'll get images/link/etc for free π
@Felix (re Research on Decentralised microBlogging) Say hello to twtxt.net π Your very own self-hosted, decentralised micro-blogging platform! Run it, Use it! Plus you can still write your Β΅Blog posts in the twtxt UNIX file format π
@Felix (re Decentralised Twitter) Well... We (_as in the twtxt.net dev_) are getting pretty damn close to proving it can be done! π
π Good News with the recent updates we made today our page speed ranking has increased from 92% to 98% π€
Just saw this Tweet from @jack himself? (_bit dated though 12:13 AM Β· Dec 12, 2019
_) Β« Twitter is funding a small independent team of up to five open source architects, engineers, and designers to develop an open and decentralized standard for social media. The goal is for Twitter to ultimately be a client of this standard. Β» Is this for real? Fund twtxt.net π
> A Canadian brewery and a New Zealand leather company have been called out for their uncomfortable use of the Maori word βhuruhuruβ.
@kt84 (re brewing company name's beer) It wasn't my favourite beer πΊ brewing company was it?! π€£
@ionores (re Meteorites!) WOW iπ² In out own backyard too! π
Trying to convince the CRUX projects to start their own twtxt feed π
@hacker_news (re Cares Ocean Planet/Astroid) π² that is soo cool!
But its rendered that way as I type it! Like βΊοΈwhich is the only once that behaves that way? macOS bug? π€·ββοΈ
βΊοΈWeird on my macOS Desktop it renders that _one_ Emoji differently too π€
@antonio (re different Emoji) Likely because of different system fonts between devices. But I _think_ that's okay?
πββοΈ But seriously though... The reason I love and am so passionate about what we've built here on twtxt.net is because I now get to participate in "social media" without having to hand over any Personal Identifiable Information (PIII), clicks, who I follow, who follows me, behaviour, etc. This is part of the reason I built this in the first place! π€ #twtxt
Really need that Markdown rendering π #iOS #App
This is great !!! Now I can read my Twts and post new ones like this one whilst on the π½ doing a π© π€£ from the #iOS App π Too much information?! π€
@off_grid_living (re UI updates) Glad you like it! We have _even more_ UI/UX updates coming soonβ’ π€£
@antonio (re first app) I hope so too! π€
Well I am super stoked today! Today marks the day twtxt.net has its first native #iOS App! π Thanks to @antonio for all the hard work he's put into this so far! Its amazing how far we've come in just ~3 weeks! Congrats to all new users that have joined the growing twtxt community and to all the devs here building this for you! π~
Good morning π From our new shiny #iOS App π€
Looking forward to the long-weekend this weekend! π
Hello @rmdes π Welcome to twtxt.net π€ If you need any help feel free to tag me @prologic or @support ! Check out /feeds for interesting users and feeds you _might_ be interested in. Enjoy! π
@hjertnes (re twtxt cli) It is _meant_ to be a UNIX (_be all design principles_) command-line client to _any_ twtxt.net pod, like this one. I _would_ expect it to behave like a nice UNIX tool and have some nice features π Technically it would just speak to the API ... Still interested? π€
@hjertnes Speaking of which... Would you be interested in taking your tw
codebase and perhaps @quite's twet and contributing to this project's CLI client? I put together the basic skeleton last night and it is able to auth, get a token and post. Wanna help? π
@hjertnes (re-garden) Hahaha so stereotypical π€£ We πΉ all the π¦ , we π₯ all the π²so there are very few π¨ left π’
@becrobinson86 I _think_ you meant paint
π€£ (_PS: You can "Edit" your last Twt!_). Now... I _think_ that if you had a π¬ it would be very interesting indeed! And not π₯± at all π€£
@dooven (re epileptic fit!) Oh you troll! π€£
