Back on my old MacBook Pro again, and it feels nice to not need to worry about updates breaking things...again. I'll have the same on my Dell laptop once Windows 7 finishes installing, giving me a stowable gaming machine for what little I still play.
Between vehicles breaking, my recent fall, and tech issues, I'm ready to retreat offline for a while to gather my nerves again.
Whoops. Deleted the wrong file while futzing around with some code, and removed my twtxt file from my server. That's what I get for not double-checking the path pointing to the test server.
Starting over again.
Almost a month gone, because I caught the COVID and was out of commission. Over the worst of it now, and slowly recovering from the rest of the symptoms.
@prologic Agreed. Same with indentation (just look at Python), as well as line spacing. It's the small things that make code much more manageable.
Technology Connections (on Youtube) posted a rather interesting old film from the 1970s called 'Critical Program Reading'. Shows how much, and how little, has changed since those days. https://youtu.be/7hdJQkn8rtA
Today, I got networking going in my Sheepshaver install of MacOS 9. I feel quite accomplished. Taking it slow seems to be helping my nerves, and limiting my social time online seems to be boosting that recovery.
@prologic Thank you, and I hope you've had a wonderful day as well.
Merry Decemberween to all.
Things I need to get used to again: typing with a JIS layout keyboard. I kinda missed it.
@prologic Thank you.
Tonight has slowly become an _ignore all the things online_ kind of night for me. Might end up taking a few days to be as offline as possible for my own sake. I'm still learning my limits, after all.
@prologic I'm glad people have kept it going. Also, I finally saw the thread from earlier. Purists are best ignored, especially when they throw a fit about not getting to enforce their opinions on others. As they say, don't feed the trolls.
@prologic I'm back, mostly. Been quiet due to having little mental energy for any social media. Apparently, my last post prior was back in...March this year.
Just looked at how twtxt.net and yarn.social is coming along. It's definitely something for the community to be proud of, IMO.
Long time no post.
My 2009 MacBook's spinning drive finally went belly-up. Managed to clone it to an SSD, but I also have a Time Machine backup, so I was covered either way. Still, no Windows partition until I can get a bigger drive.
Kinda want to look into BBSes as well. I blame the great BBS docu series by Al's Geek Lab on YouTube.
Back on my Fedora laptop while I get used to things on the Linux side again. Kinda tempted to learn tbamud to make a small personal MUCK for the challenge.
Finally got around to fixing txtnish to work properly on Mac 10.6.8 with the squid HTTPS proxy. It may be an old OS, but it's a nice OS if you want to mostly stay off the modern web.
I really needed that long break from everything.
I desparately needed that break from everything. I mean, I'm still going to be somewhat quiet, but that's the beauty of hosting your own stuff on the small web: no pressure to constantly post or produce content.
You know it's gonna be a good day when the plastic contact covers for the wall outlet you're working on end up falling off. Thankfully, I was replacing the faceplace, but I quickly scooted out to shut off the breaker to the room.
Finally got my copy of the 'sed & awk' book to use for reference. Been really needing something that can help me understand those two tools.
New whiteboard obtained, after my partner's bird accidentally ruined the previous one. Maybe I can finally get a little bit of coding done once I map things out on a surface that I can see.
@prologic What the... Most of the FOSS community seem to be losing their collective minds with the whole RMS thing. I had to ditch FOSStodon and a number of other places to get some sanity, but now I'm wondering if I just need to stay away from the web/net as a whole for a while. I also know one gopher bookmark I'll be removing from lynx now. Not going to give them the benefit of doubt after posting such a horrid poll.
Oof... Looks like Twtxt.net is down again. Rebranding is rough, but this is really rough.
Oh hey! I'm actually keeping up with gitea updates for once. Just upgraded, and I feel a little better for it.
@jlj Yeah, I started using wttr when I first found out about it, and then remembered cht.sh again shortly after. Good luck with the golang project.
I swear, cht.sh is one of the most useful things I've come across while learning how to write code.
It's always difficult waiting for packages to arrive, but I think my bookshelves are happy to have a bit longer to relax. 😆

Old books purchased and on their way. 'Perl Resource Kit - Unix Edition', on its way to me. Really wanted the set because I couldn't find eBook versions of any part of it, and it'll look good on my bookshelf.
Trying to get txtnix working, despite not being actively maintained. I've been tring to get into Perl development, and this looks like a fun one to hack on in my spare time.
Oh wow... Woke up to twtxt.net giving me 404s and 504s. Hope things are okay over there, cause I'm not getting anything from any of their users at the moment.
Huh... That last post of mine might have exposed a small bug. txtnish wouldn't post unless I removed the backticks I'd had in there. ...Time to learn sed and awk!

It's almost 05:00, I've barely gotten good sleep, and I suddenly want to try and make a manpage for txtnish, just as groff practice. I swear, I'm not going crazy...
@movq I think I fixed it. Strange that nginx still doesn't default to UTF-8.
@prologic Agreed. Having the reply feature work with the threading would be nice.
I'm gonna need to hack on txtnish a bit when I have a chance, but I'm loving it so far. It's all sh/awk/sed, so going through it won't be an issue.

Just set up txtnish ( https://github.com/mdom/txtnish ) since twtxt (the python clinet) keeps failing on me. Let's see if this works out better.
Finally got around to ordering the slice battery for my Latitiude E6430 (it plugs into the docking connector on the bottom). That'll double the battery life, and it'll prop up the laptop when I need to work on battery, so two major pros to having it. I just have to charge it separately when I'm using the actual dock. 🙃
Had such bad batterly life running *nix on my laptop. Win7 gives 7.5 hours battery, Linux has shown around 2-3. Running a Linux VM on Windows 7? 7.25 hours. So at least I can have my work and gaming together in one place. Better than just not being able to run Linux at all, too.
Reading through 'Learn Python the Hard Way' by Zed Shaw, because so far, it's the only Python book that feels like it was made with some tact behind it. His lesson methods are blunt, but effective.
Good to see a few more people beginning to use twtxt again outside of the major pods. I much prefer this over the alternatives.
Getting used to things like RMAIL and elfeed for various things in Emacs again. I missed using this thing, though not as much as WordGrinder.
itch.io has really made indie gaming on Linux a viable option against Steam. I love it.
Ended up naming the new system 'colorparadise', since it has RGB lights. 😆
Really loving the new desktop I got as a gift. Runs Fedora like a dream, and as a gaming rig, it's very nice. And RGB lights are fun.
Took back the so-called /gaming/ desktop yesterday. Spent most of today exploring options for a used core system to upgrade. Really want a system for games to take my mind off things.
I'm so glad most of what I use is CLI/TUI. Tiny apps make for quicker compiles, so I'm not waiting twenty hours just to start doing things on the new setup.
Getting a new desktop today. That's gonna be fun to set up.
Someone I talked with suggested I single-boot *nix on my Mac Pro, cause then I could use the nVidia GTS 450 with it, and have a hell of a system to stream with. It's...tempting.
Terminal apps are really helping my RSI these days. Really thankful for them.
Trying to get into a bit of bash and lua scripting today. Also really need to learn the basics of C at some point.
Fillings done and over with. Now for a bit of recovery before the first of my wisdom teeth are taken own. Maybe I'll finally have time to work on something once it's all said and done.
I really need to find/make a nice zim-like wiki app for the terminal. orgmode-style stuff just isn't sufficent for my needs as a writer. Too much cross-referencing in my notes.
Finally have a working Xubuntu install on my desktop again. I am happy.
Being back on Windows feels so strange, but this GPU is going to be the death of me if I keep trying to force the matter on Linux.
Really wanting to sit back and read a nice book, but all of my ficiton books are currently in the garage because I don't have room for them inside. I'll have to change that eventually.
The more I use the modern web, the more I'm annoyed by the attention-grabbing aspects and bloat. Waiting seven seconds for a small group of thumbnails to load should not be a thing with broadband.
Really need to get myself added to we-are-twtxt when I can remember to contact the list maintainer.
It's dawned on me that twtxt is kinda what I wanted in an activitypub server: non-distracting, asyncronus, no database, tui/cli-oriented, and just plain simple. No push notifications for mentions, but that's something I could live with.
I've got my LG Fx0 (Firefox OS) sitting on my desk, and it always seems to remind me of the grudge I still hold against Mozilla for killing such an awesome phone OS. I'd take it over Android any day.
Just gave exa a try. Really love how nice it looks. It actually feels a bit snappier than ls as well.
Waking up and seeing my server not under strain means the start of a good day for me.
Finally got things set up with my server, my desktop is moved away from the floor, and I've got a little more space. Now if I weren't so sick.
Ratpoison has been my saving grace lately. Mostly due to my wrist being in such pain when I'm using a mouse, or even my trackball.
Giving this thing a try
