The FSF Doubles Down On Restoring RMS After His Non-Apology Apology ⌘ Read more...
Disingenuous headline. What I saw in his statement looked like an apology to me, as well as an honest self-reflection. What more do people want. The witch-hunt needs to stop, and in general I am sick to death of news headlines being twisted to have a slanted take on a subject before the reader even reads the content.
But without a _twisted slant_ or clickbait how would said "News and Media" sites make any money from advertising?! 🤔\n\n...\n\n🤣 😂 😲

@eldersnake Also I agree! I'm so sick to death of this "witch-hunt", "cancel everything" culture we've come to developer over the years. We've become far too sensitive in society (_yes I get it, RMS may have said some not so tasteful things, but maybe he's just not very good at reading the crowd?_)_

There is no apology that is ever good enough for these people. It is both demanded and used as confirmation of the exaggerated guilt assigned to disqualify someone from their profession.
Others are not happy with their lot and are quick to become spiteful. Cancelling others is a way to reduce the pool of competition in hope that one day a more prestigious position will open up, and only a smaller minority of 'the right sort' (less challenging / mediocre) will be acceptable choices.

@lazarus While I don't disagree with the points you've raised, I do think there are other aspects to consider on the subject #rms and the FSF: e.g., the future of the latter as a vibrant, thriving organisation in the next decade and beyond; in particular, I think some comments on the recent LWN article raise good points regarding this.
@jlj @lazarus Call me _ignorant_, but honestly I've been contributing to open-source for some decades now. I _really_ never knew about #rms -- didn't really appreciate what or what he did not do. I personally _think_ open source is more than what #rms himself, it's about freedom, freedom to express one's self, freedom to give back, freedom to collaborate, freedom to control one's own "things" and so on. I've always valued this about open-source with or without Richard Stallman.

@prologic @lazarus I would never call you ignorant. ;-D But #rms would take umbrage with your conflating open source and free software, I'd imagine. '...“open source” doesn’t fully convey the importance of the movement and the potential long-term social problems caused by proprietary software. [FSF et al] sees OSI as being too concerned with promoting the practical benefits of non-proprietary software (including its profitability and the efficiency of a community-driven development model), and not concerned ethical [issues]...' https://envs.sh/PH
What exactly would #rms take issue with? Am I doing OSS all wrong?! 🤣

@prologic Conflating "open source" and "free software", as @jlj said. I'm sorry, I wasn't clear.

@jlj @mckinley I do kind of think my point was missed slightly ☺️ Maybe I can reword it better? 🤔

@prologic @mckinley Actually, I think you worded it well. Certainly makes sense to me. Swap "open source" for "free/libre software" and I bet even #rms would've been happy with what you emphasised. :-)
@jlj @mckinley Hah! I _actaully_ had to go re-read up the definitions again (_thankfully the ones on Wikipedia are okay_). I _realize_ there are differences of course, but if you squint hard enough they are "quite subtle" in places. I _think_ that's why there's also thing "thing" called FOOS 🤣
