Sidequestion: currently I am running a TiddlyWiki for myself with private and public tagged posts. The intention was, to make non-private tiddlers (posts) public at one point in the future. Now I have found https://github.com/usememos/memos whis looks really nice. If I find out how to skin it a bit to have wider text, I shortly thought about switching over. No InterWiki Links so, but that is doable by linking manually.
What do you guys think of this?
@carsten I kind of use HedgeDoc for a similar purpose actually 👌

@prologic I used hedgdoc as well. But, hedgedoc is not usable from iPad or iPhone. From mobile I cannot post images, cannot edit text - even with a keyboard attached. I wanted to use hedgedoc last year for vacation and travel log for friends and family. But not being able to post from mobile made me setup my own mailing list https://lab.uberspace.de/guide_listmonk/
I want to use it for travel logging for friends and family. I might spin up another instance under a weird subdomain name and sent that to friends and family to follow along.
@carsten I had a look at it when you posted this a few days ago, and I couldn't help but wonder whether one could just do the same sort of thing with a separate yarnd
instance 🤣

@prologic I thought about that for my self, but yarn does not understand the concept of private posts, or hidden posts.
@carsten Yes yes. Good point. It does not. Something to consider though... We've had a few discussions on this over the years, but nothing has ever "stuck" (yet).

@carsten For your case, you could have a basic auth over your yarn instance maybe?
@justamoment ja schon, could be. But my wife might be right with "When people have to enter username and password to view something / even when it is only once, they might not go and take a look"and currently, the fucking Basic Auth is not working... and I have no idea why.
@carsten I see, I have no idea for any alternative that's simple to handle for your case.

@justamoment We also thought about that solution. Try to introduce friends and familiy to something new that is just important for you when you want to share something with them. Think about how hard it would be to convince them. Most of my family and friends will tell me last time, why I do not share things on Facebook with them, as everyone is there, and I should not make such a big deal out of it.
Then I did send out emails with one image and a link to a PDF. This was OK, but some of them said, the PDF took so long to load on their smartphone. Yes, some of the PDFs with images in were 80-100 MB big. It is complicated, and it all gets down to the point, where we, FOSS and more privacy focused people are left out, left behind or not getting informed when something happens in the family. I just don't care anymore. Only a bit...
@carsten "It's too complicated", "Use what everyone else use" or "Why I can't do X only with you?"
I've heard those phrases too many times.
My way of doing is a bit weird but help others know that I'm always reachable, but not in a way others do.
> I purposely delay everything from what I don't like to use
Ranging from days to weeks or months, messages or content shared via WhatsApp or other similar medium, a Facebook link (I don't have FB) is ignored, a group chat is totally ignored even when mentioned.
I'm always immediate on answering via direct messages and calls, I also always say this "What do you need help with?" like a good family call center to see for what reason they contact me.
Doing so for many years has paid off greatly.
Some cut ties by saying I'm antisocial (partly true 😎) and never care for me again, not that they cared before, others stopped writing to me and directly choose to call or video call, "just to see me", it makes me happy to know that, others started inviting me to their house for lunch or dinner just to meet me.
That's what I did, if someone care for you they'll find ways to interact with you and maybe they'll try to understand and (and maybe adopt) your ways of doing and tools.
@justamoment I like that way, and personally follow something similar.
IMO it's OK to be opinionated, to respect differences. One example is with Operating Systems. Do you want to use Mac, Win, Ubuntu? That's OK. You say that ecosystem is better? Nice, enjoy it!
My curiosity goes on understanding the good, the bad and the ugly parts of the tech we use, and, why not? Having a great conversation with a beer or our favorite drink when it's more convenient to both. Calling is caring 🙂
@eaplmx that's right. I'd use something like WhatsApp to chat if the other party don't understand the difference, but if you know and you're stubborn I'll negotiate an alternative or leave it alone.
@justamoment I do like to take calls. I like that. I call back asap if I cannot take it. People don't understand, that message is like a postcard/letter. Fire and forget and will be answered when time is available. A call is something I would use if I need immediate answer. But these days, oh my gosh!!!!!, people ask me to send them a text before calling them. It would be nice to know... what the FUCK is wrong with them. I don't care. I just call. If they would rather not pick up, that's OK. I try two more times, in a 5-minute range, then I send text to give me call asap!
@justamoment Invitations is much nice. We just met with a new colleague of mine. I took the chance to drive up to him with the bike and then we drove back to my place together. So he knows the way. Very nice weather for that. Was super nice. Had a coffee, some waffles, played two rounds of Mario Kart and then he left for some more biking and grocery shopping (yes, all supermarkets are open on Sunday in NL). Was much better than just texting all day long. My parents had to learn that the hard way, but they adopted and video over Signal is much better now. The relationship with them also got better.
@carsten I like calls, but I don't like to be interrupted.
What has worked for me, and many from my generation is a short msg like "Available for a call? / Sure"
Also https://eapl.mx/15 has been really useful to have a call in the future
@carsten I never answer the phone unless I know who is calling and we have a scheduled call. 99/100 times, the caller is not someone I want to speak to. Either they are spam, or they are companies I have accounts with trying to sell me new services, or they are political calls. It's so bad I don't watch my phone for calls, and I don't even know where it is much of the time. I use kdeconnect
to monitor texts on my computer, which is where I am sitting most of the time.
If someone I know wants to talk on the phone, we arrange by text, email, Slack, whatever works, pick a time, and then one of us calls the other. I have them in my address book so I see their name when the call comes in. I am expecting their call, so I actually locate my phone and keep it nearby.
If there is something "wrong" with me because of that, so be it. I'd rather be wrong than deal with so much wasted time and aggravation every day!

@abucci A good friend and old colleague of mine (CTO) has this rule. He will not accept a call unless you've emailed him ahead of time or he already has you in his contacts. I was thinking about doing something similar to this myself one day, never accept a phone call unless a) I have you in my contacts or b) You've emailed me ahead of time. -- Quite a clever strategy IMO 👌

@abucci I think it's a good approach, but in my case a friend with a shop shared my business cards with their clients and other shops he worked with so I sometimes have calls from strangers looking for me for works or commissions so I usually keep my phone at hand (or at least know where it is).
If I didn't do that, I too wouldn't use my phone at all some days, except for things I read or research.
@justamoment Hmm yes, that's a good point. I think if I gave out my number like that I'd pay more attention to my phone too.
