Eye opening on the levels of device fingerprinting (YouTube)... Apples App Tracking Transparency is Useless for Tracker Blocking
@eldersnake Damn I block YouTube at home 😂

@prologic You could try this link instead https://invidious.namazso.eu/watch?v=rf-FQ_fiuvQ
@eldersnake Oh! 😳 What’s this service then? 🤔

@prologic That would be an open source YouTube frontend that people host instances of: https://github.com/iv-org/invidious\nVery handy for those that don't want to go on actual YouTube.
@eldersnake How does the licensing of uploaded videos to Youtube work here in this case? I also built and host a similar thing (_it supports importing Youtube and Vimeo, though I think Youtube is broken now for some reason_) at [tube.mills.io[(https://tube.mills.io) -- I've never been sure of this myself 🤔 Youtube though is again one of those platforms that's in the book of "advertising" business models that insists on tracking everything it can about you! 😳 It **is** a Google™ owned product afterall (_sorry I mean Alphabet!_) 🤦‍♂️

@eldersnake Just finished watching this (_thank you_) and WOW! 😳 I honestly had no idea it was this bad, obviously I don't have any of the apps installed mentioned, but geez louise! 🤦‍♂️ -- For posterity, do you recall the name of the app for iOS that helps you detect trackers? We should mentioned it here in this conversation and link to it for others 👌

And I'll say this again;

>The only way out of this insestious tracking privacy eroding behaviour of much of the tech giants out there is to completely band advertising business models and make it illegal.
> Governments need to make targeted advertising and data collection for the purposes of driving advertising **illegal**.

@eldersnake Did you see/hear the bit about tracking your battery level to 15 decimal places?! 😱 I mean seriously wtf?! 😳

Hold on a minute, which program/component has access to the current sound level and battery level? What are we talking about here? Is this something that every web site can track or is it something specific to iOS?

Are we talking about a global setting in iOS, which is supposed to “stop tracking” across apps? So it’s the individual apps that still have access to those metrics?

@movq I think it’s specific to “apps” 🤔

@prologic (#52cun2a) Honestly I'm not too sure (re: licensing etc). Whether it makes any difference, as far as I can tell (and may be wrong) it's simply proxying the video data from YouTube, akin to streaming via youtube-dl.\n\nBut yeah, I was stunned by the level of tracking, like the 15 decimal placed battery level, storage usage etc. It's just insane.\n\nAnd yeah @movq, pretty sure it's just what apps can access, if they choose to, but it's scary that they _can_.
@prologic Governments are probably fine with it so long as the top are able to evade it themselves. Outsources the data collection for free. Government can just demand access to the data for their own purposes.

@laz Yeah this is the _other_ problem in general, Most (_if not all?_) government have a _really_ bad culture of impunity. 😢

@eldersnake Yup! I _think_ that's what was talked about 👌 I'll have to install it and try it out and report back 🤞
