Intel's Pay-As-You-Go CPU Feature Gets Launch Window
Intel's mysterious Software Defined Silicon (SDSi) mechanism for adding features to Xeon CPUs will be officially supported in Linux 5.18, the next major release of the operating system. Tom's Hardware reports: SDSi allows users to add features to their CPU after they've already purchased it. Formal SDSi support means that the technology is coming to Intel's Xeon proc ... ⌘ Read more
This is honestly quite disgusting. I've emailed Intel ti implore them not to go down this very ethically questionable path. I also have to wonder, how did this even make it in the mainline Linux Kernel? Was Linus asleep when this rolled into the Kernel?! 😳

@prologic what is this about? Could you provide some context? Can’t tell from anything on your twt.
Oh, now your twt has the context. It took a little to pop. Reading.
Meh. I will soon be using exclusively ARM processors. Let Intel get into this—potential—mess. It might end up being a good feature for those still on their platform, who knows.
@david That's "Convergence for you 😂 But yeah sorry I _should_ have also written some extra context myself. This is all about Intel's next revenue stream/move. It sort of reminds me of the shit that Toyota tried to pull by attempting to (_then pulled out_) charge their customers a monthly service fee for the privilege of remote starting their car with their key fob that itself is entirely a local mechanism to the car. I mean c'mon 🤦♂️ Or the stupid shit that Samsung TV's now pull by shoving advertising in your face with 1/3 of the screen real-estate gone to their stupid crummy advertisements.
