@prologic @ullarah I often see messages longer than what the textbox limit is, isn't it limited by the maxlenght
?, I found a workaround by writing from Goryon on mobile, on PC i can simply change the limit with the inspector but isn't it there for a reason?
I too would like to express a bit more if possible, especially if i have to refer to users and link URLs and images for example, having a limit that isn't too much of a limit is kind of pointless i think. π€
@justamoment i recall seeing a longer post from you and was absolutely baffled how you did it. ironically i saw it while using goryon :-)
@mutefall That's right, at first I didn't notice the limit, then when writing from my PC i got stuck. π€‘
The issue is not with the limit itself, I'm curious about the reason to have it in first place since it's seems to not be a technical limitation.
I would like to keep the same design decisions in the app too. πͺ
@justamoment hey! Yeah the limit is set by the poderator. However itβs a limit set by Yarn.social instances. Itβs more of a deterrent than anything. I mean you could post up the entire War and Peace novel or even the Bee Movie script.
However in doing so will probably get you promptly removed from the instance and/or muted by several of your followers.
@ullarah Ok! π
Then there quite some data we need via API since it's not hard coded.
If I ever get to that point I'll just link the screenplay from somewhere else. π₯Έ
It's also to prevent abuse / attack on the pod π But we could make the default much higher π€

@justamoment my guess was that since it's not dbase-backed and is a text-file, there's not really a way to do a max
since it's lacking columns and rows
@prologic this is reasonable. if someone was pasting the c manual that could cause some issues :-) but perhaps upping it a bit might be nice
@mutefall if we increase the default value can somebody come up with a reasonable value that suits most humans that isn't too small and isn't insanely too big or too big probably just warrants a proper blog post anyway

@mutefall That's right.
I don't really mind the current limitation, I'll just play around with the words.
@prologic I'll leave that choice to you all but I guess for me another 100-200 chars could be perfect for my type of messages, but you should hear some more opinions from the others.
@xuu Interesting...
I _think_ the default right now is 576
.
How about we go somewhere in-between? Does anyone have any strong arguments for 4096
? What about 1024
? 2048
? I'm not sure how to make this decision to be honest. All I know is the original "Twtxt" sepc specifying 128
was a bit too small to be remotely useful π€£

I know I tried removing the character limit in the inspector but I thought it didn't work and the server truncated my post. 1024 is a nice, round number. It probably shouldn't be much higher than that because at a certain point it goes from a "microblog" to just a "blog".

@mckinley Agreed! π
Can we all vote on the new default being 1024
then perhaps? π€
+1 from me
