Communication in 2021 is surprisingly fucked. We've abandoned technologies that are totally fine (email, RSS, xmpp, even SMS and amazingly normal voice telephone calls..) for a mileau of closed bullshit platforms that don't interoperate. (slack, discord, iMessage, etc etc etc) This is not a novel observation but it drives me nuts.

I'm glad that voicemail it not really a thing anymore and a have it turned off from my phone carrier. Most voice messages are just pocket calls or people who did not manage to hand up before the beep. And there is more open and interoperable alternatives to the silo systems such as matrix.org, delta.chat and twtxt/yarn.social. Sadly most people are not willing to pay for these service just yet. The fee for these services could be via your ISP or phone carrier or governments might realize that these are vital part of our infrastructure and provide services funding by tax
