So many people in IT are so bitter and constantly ranting. “This sucks”, “that sucks”, “I know better”. It’s exhausting. And it’s “toxic” – in the sense that I, myself, often do it, too.
It’s been like that for as long as I can remember … Why do we love misery so much?
It’s really turning me off lately, making me want to leave IT for good. 😒

@movq Maybe you are in the wrong company. I understand what you are talking about because I lived it in some companies. But most of the time successful teams are not like that. They are all let's do it together and share knowledge.
@tkanos Maybe. 🤔 I’m seeing this outside of my company, too, though.

@movq oof, I feel like I'm guilty of this too 😳
@movq Something about mystery and company and somehow those two going hand-in-hand? I _think_ you have to show a positive example and grow a strong positive culture, which is hard if it's already pretty low in the first place 🤔

@movq is it perhaps a Hacker mindset of breaking things?
I was reading on Hacker News the other day about the collide of different personalities in the same space. Those wanting to give maintenance to existing systems (the stereotype of IT guy), the hackers (breaking stuff because why not) and the developers (building thinks to solve problems).
And in an environment of earning money to make a living. Everything together sounds like a recipe for a very 'fun' environment.

@eaplmx I definately think there's a place for all three times in one organisation.

@movq I see a lot of carelessness combined with unexperienced people and stupid political decisions. And there's much more to add.
@prologic there is, the issue is making those 3 to work together in a semi-cooperative environment. It's possible with the right incentives
@abucci I guess we all are, to some extent. 😅 Maybe it’s simply because so much software actually *is* horrible. 🤔 Dunno, to me, it feels like very little progress has been made since the 1990ies, at least in terms of usability and program features. We’re kind of stuck in a cycle of people reinventing the wheel. It’s hard to test this hypothesis, of course … We can’t go back to Windows 3.11 or whatever and use it as a daily driver, because it’s not compatible with anything. (And there you have it, another mini-rant. 😅)
@prologic I try to stay positive, yes, especially when new members join the team. But as you said, it’s hard. 🫤
@eaplmx Hmmmmmm. 🤔 I need to think about that.

@movq Well a lot of the things in IT suck sadly, but it is probably better to also focus on the improving parts from time to time. For example people finally starting to worry about their privacy, or leaving big tech, to try out some alternative community hosted platforms.
Also things sucking is not exclusive to IT, as most things look nice on the outside, but when you get deeper, you find out the much darker reality of that field and in things like art the reality is much darker, than it is in IT.
@movq A lot of software is pretty bad, you just can't let it beat you down.
