Ever since modern Muay Thai took over in the early 1900's, it evolved into a professional sport. Fighters are now athletes who compete at a regular basis and the training is based on power, endurance and durability. In Muay Boran, however, there are many more techniques to learn. And in this process of complexity, the practical side is oftentimes neglected.
For us at the academy, Muay Boran should be trained, not just for performance but for practicality. And this is where Muay Thai training comes in, with its practical, no-nonsense approach. Although there are many differences between the ancient and modern techniques, they still come from the same tree, so to speak. We cannot deny that effective training methods include repetition, intensity and simplicity, all of which are part of modern Muay Thai.
Since Muay Boran is no longer used in the battlefields and has become more of a spectator show, it is still the original Muay Thai with so much more to offer. All we need to do is train it, not just for form but for function.
