Ukraine Proposes ICANN Remove Russian Domains
"With so many coming together on the side of Ukraine (even those who traditionally stay neutral in international affairs), asking ICANN to take action against Russia seems like it could be a reasonable proposition under the circumstances," writes new Slashdot submitter unimind. "As a bonus, the likely decrease in spam would be a welcome reprieve..." The Register reports: In response ... ⌘ Read more
Nope. Revoke all .ru CA(s) and .ru TLS Certs

It is Putin who is the aggressor, not the people who make websites. And yes, I know, there are also bad guys, but many people who do business rely on that. I think that's a bit too much.
@carsten Do you think the Ukrainians are able to do business and carry on right now?

@prologic I'm in favor of all the sanctions I've seen so far, but the Internet is already held together by paper clips and duct tape, so I wouldn't want to poke it too much and have it fracture into every group of countries having their own separate network, with no connections to others.

Also I'm already unhappy that there's only one big organization, with the monopoly on top level domains and I wouldn't want to give them any power, that they could use to censor things later on.
@thecanine No you missed the point, this particular Slashdot article got it all wrong. You don't veoke the .ru gTLD, that _does indeed_ have side effects we don't want. DNS should remain as-is. What we _can_ do however is Certificate Authorities (_of which there are many_) can all revoke their .ru Intermediate Certificates and we can revoke all .ru TLS certificates.

This will make it quite hard to do business and make any secure translations, etc. Hopefully crippling the Russian economy and ending this pointless war.

@prologic I wouldn't have any problems with that, but as you mentioned, there's so many of them out thete, the chance all of them would do it, is pretty close to none.
@thecanine What, an unprovoked War and War crimes by Mr Putin and crimes against humanity isn't enough to systematically revoke all of Russia's ability to trade, buy, sell, stockpile, etc? Hmmm 🤔 Maybe you're right, but here's hoping the relevant CA(s) do the right thing, because it's the right thing to do. Cut them off at the top.
