Google Experiences Hundreds of Covid Cases After Return-to-Office Mandate
"Google employees are receiving regular notifications from management of Covid-19 infections," CNBC report Friday — "causing some to question the company's return-to-office mandates."
The employees, who spoke with CNBC on the condition of anonymity, said since they have been asked to return to offices, infections notifications ... ⌘ Read more

@abucci I just find this whole "we need everyone back in physical offices, bums on seats" to be insane 😅 Sure _some_ people need that human contact and physical social interaction, others don't. Sure there are _some_ types of work that require physical human presence (doctors, nurses, waiters, etc). But this whole let's force every IT worker back into physical offices (the force part) is just stupidly ridiculous at this point. 🤦♂️

@prologic yeah, it's not about the work or productivity.
@abucci Do you think it's just a "power" struggle or companies freaking out over having to change how they operate and deinvest in building spaces?
Or a bit of both? 🤔

@prologic I'm not sure. Probably both. It just seems odd. The work gets done, the companies are more profitable than ever, so why do they care where their employees are located?
@abucci @prologic Google is deeply dependent on its corporate culture. It depends on both it's amenities and the internal social structure to keep people working there and to keep them there for extended hours. Google's entire thing collapses if people aren't there for the free food.
@ocdtrekkie @prologic I wonder how "free food" and "multiple cases of COVID per year" weigh against one another.......
@abucci having once worked at Facebook myself and working in their campus with the so-called "free food" I have to wonder this to myself now 😆

@ocdtrekkie New cultures and ways of working can be built -- which I guess is the point 🤔

With the electricity prices still rising, contracts for it having to be re-negotiated and winter coming up soon (at least on this side of flat earth), they might soon start begging everyone to stay home, so they can save on heating.
Or at least that's what some universities here are already considering.
