Discovered RSSHub while trying to transition from email to RSS for all our project's issues. (That isn't one of the feeds GitHub provides.) Fought with npm, trying to get it to use a pre-built version of OpenCC; gave up. (1/2)
@jlj Decided to try docker-compose, since it was the first deployment option listed; worked flawlessly, the first time. 🤦 I feel like this was supposed to be the promise of Java. Ah-mazing. Now to set up a reverse proxy, so I can use all my feeds with my Newsblur account!

remind me again what Newsblur is? 🤔 Any similarities to feeds.twtxt.net?

@prologic It's basically a gated community for your RSS feeds. I've paid for Pro ever since Google killed Reader. You can share feeds internally, but the similarities end there.

@jlj @prologic Been a bit of a love/hate thing. Depending on how RSSHub goes, maybe I'll host my reader too, and donate that $25/year to Yarn! :-D

@jlj Or just use Twtxt and follow feeds at feeds.twtxt.net like I do? What do we need to do to make that more useful to more folks? This is how I read my news, but I'm not sure how many other folks use it currently 😉

@prologic Scale is mostly the issue, for me: I've got 4500+ unread items right now; 2100 saved items. It would flood my timeline here, any way I look at it. But I want to do more with RSS: better searching and alerting, to start.

@jlj Yeah I _totally_ get that. I've had to stop following some feeds because they were too "noisy". But I have to ask... Would you really read that much volume? I mean what's the daily volume like? Can we build better capabilities in the RSS -> Twtxt service such as filtering, aggregation functions, top N, etc? i.e: Chew up an RSS, spit out something smaller and more digestable?

@prologic Oh, preachin' to the choir there, mate! ;-) Absolutely. I mean, part of my problem is I use RSS for what I used to use del.ico.us for as well; a sort of memory, with crummy tagging. None of it is really fit for the purposes I have in mind. I've had to... [1/2]

@jlj @prologic ... I've had to explode my learning in the last year, in this new job. So, yeah, my feeds have followed a similar trajectory. And, yeah, Newsblur has 'intelligence' around why something becomes a 'focus' item, but it's still very rudimentary.

Re [1⁄2] just go increase your pod's MaxTwtLength either in Settings -> Pod Management or the equivalent CLI/ENV flags :)

@prologic I had been thinking that I could force myself to be witty. :-P Doesn't seem to be working. But, yeah, I had seen the setting. :-D

I _actually_ think we should change the default from 276 to 576 to be honest. That's what I've been running on my pod for quite a while now. Seems to be a happy medium.

Could you make a separate feed for RSS so that it doesn't interfere with the timeline? My marginal use of Mastodon on floss.social has become just a selective rss feed

Yeah we can definitely do something along these lines. We don't have support for it now, but Issue #348 is a similar ask...

Sleeping on this reminded me that I wanted to play with Miniflux. And it looks like you can use Newsboat as a front-end; the scripting around this latter software sounds like something that could help with my RSS firehose. 🤔😜

@jlj I'm using Newsboat for ages (came across it when it still was called Newsbeuter). If you want to script/filter/automate a lot, you're maybe better off scripting something with rsstail and similar tools. Newsboat is meant more for human interaction.
@lyse Ah, good to know! Cheers! I've just now got Miniflux ingesting a local RSSHub feed of all jointwt/twtxt issues. :-D But I'll definitely be looking to pick your brain as I explore using Newsboat as a front-end to the lot. :-)

@jlj Sure! I'm using Newsboat with Atom and RSS feeds only, no remote APIs. My workflow is also really simple. Go through my "Unread Articles" query feed and jump to the next unread article. Maybe enqueue a podcast episode or YouTube video. Never had the need to do much more complicated stuff. But Newsboat supports tons of features and settings. I recommend reading through the docs first to get an idea of what can be done.
