@darch save the part from the instance blocking, which I believe it is a mistake that does more harm than good
@darch It's a good visualisation and great explanation 👌

@akoizumi instance blocking is absolutely necessary. 100%, without a doubt has to be there.
The _problem_ is Mastodon is _really_ a "distributed" network, not _really_ "decentralised" per se, it is and is isn't in the strictest sense. Instances get far too large, and you can see what happens when they grow even larger, they strain and struggle to keep up with the load and traffic on them.
Blocking bad instances is necessary, but it wouldn't be as necessary if instances were much smaller IMO.

@prologic the sad realty is that blocking will always be necessary. I block individual IP addresses and address ranges on my VPS because so e are repeated bad actors. As soon as yarn. social scales, there will be bad actors who need to be blocked. technology does not solve human social problems for you.
I'd also argue that *not* having varied and robust controls like blocking will be an impediment to adoption. there are populations on the internet who are relentlessly harassed, and they will simply avoid using your tech (and probably will never tell you either) if you don't give them the tools to cut off the harassment. "being a woman on the internet" is not a joke, it's horrible.

@abucci Yeah I agree. We really have to have the "right" controls in place, and so far I _think_ we do 🤔

@prologic I've been thinking, and discussing in class as well, how much an information tool can improve the lifestyle of a population? Basically, what problems are we solving with technology?
It's about transmitting bytes in form of words, images and basically multimedia. I had the same thought for my hobby and profession of creating games. How much a game improves someone's life?
But anyway, we, as a society, need the entertainment the social media and technology in general, offers.
