Many are very upset about the return of RMS, and how that could be seen to legitimise his views. I knew nothing about his views, really, controversial or otherwise. I'm currently correcting that. I do like how he's acknowledged that his views on certain controversial subjects has changed since 2013; an admission that he was wrong. I guess an important question is whether his new views on said subjects align with the current moral standard. More reading required...
@jlj Who's "RMS"?! 🤣

@prologic lol. Richard Stallman.
A good summary of the situation; echoes what I read in the Telegram group devoted to diversity in open source projects, minus the personal accounts of being triggered by the news. :-(
Forgot about this post from a few years ago, which, while explicitly not about RMS, is still interesting, and speaks to the differences between the FSF and the FSFE, and community-building more generally: Don't sacrifice the right ideas to win the right words.
@jlj Oh! 🤦‍♂️

@lazarus Ueah this is so crazy! I’m so sick of this “cancel culture” we seem to be living in these days.

RMS and I would probably be so far apart politically speaking, and probably various other issues, but I really respect the man, and would never want him 'cancelled'. He's hard to deal with, often seemingly extreme in his views, but he's important IMO. He provides a necessary balance in a world where a lot of people are all too willing to give up basic freedoms and privacy.
@eldersnake Agreed! Priblem is I think it’s all but too late 😥

This is an awful take. The issue isn't that he's cantankerous and rigid; it's that he's sexist, misogynistic, ableist, transphobic, and has a decades-long history of making women feel unsafe. This isn't "cancel culture", it's "consequences" (as is usually the case with that term).

@anth Oh really? Hmmm 🤔 Interesting... To be honest I don’t really know much about the guy 😁 But that’s puts a different perspective on things m...

I would be surprised if RMS was transphobic and such, given he's all about the gender neutral pronouns etc, but maybe I missed something.
@eldersnake maybe we all have. I feel like we’re all too young to really know Richard Stallman in this conversation except maybe Anthony 🤣

@lazarus Wow. What a fantastic piece; particularly the excerpt from Nadine Strossen. Thanks for sharing!
He's fine with gender-neutral pronouns when he gets to pick them, but insists on policing others'. The open letter calling for his removal has references.

Just bought a copy of 'HATE: Why We Should Resist It With Free Speech, Not Censorship' off the back of that. :-)
@jlj I feel like “HATE” is an acronym for something 🤔

@prologic Yeah, particularly when it's capitalised like that.
