@prologic Yeah, it's tough to say. Some of the comments on this post question whether that initial salary was too generous. I've been away from North America for too long; I can't tell. And that's only one aspect of this issue, of course.
That epic interview with Torvalds has a take: "... I'm personally 100% convinced that not only is open source sustainable, but for complex technical issues you really *need* open source simply because the problem space ends up being too complex to manage inside one single company. Even a big and competent tech company..." https://envs.sh/wS -- But that isn't quite the same thing as developers living comfortably from writing it, of course.

@jlj Yeah I took the same take away from his interview too! 👌 I also think it’s still possible to earn a living from open source development, I just don’t know how myself 🤣 (yet?)
