@anth not trolling, and genuinely serious question: what advantages does Plan 9 provides that [*insert any UNIX alike OS here*] doesn’t?
Lots. 🤣 The system is small, coherent, and understandable in a way no modern unix is. The namespace operations remain incredibly powerful. And several of the tools built on it, like the way network listeners and the mail server are built, are just much nicer to use, modify, and build on.

Lots of downsides, too, but overall I still find it the most comfortable environment for anything that doesn't need a web browser. :-)

I'd honestly have to try it out for myself to _really_ get a feel for it I believe. I think it's hard to judge without having some first hands on experience with Plan 9. I've had plenty of hands-on experience with other UNICES like Solaris and BSD(s).

Oh, me too: FreeBSD, macOS, and Solaris in server environments extensively, and Linux, AIX, HP/UX, Irix, probably others I'm forgetting. Plan 9 is a whole other class of thing.

@anth Never had an opportunity for some of the more uncommon ones like AIX myself.

I've played around with Plan 9 in VirtualBox recently and found it pretty interesting. Only thing I struggle with is the mouse-centric window manager as my wrist cramps up real bad 😥
@fastidious You'll have to run it yourself for a while. What I found pretty cool is how programmable/extensible it is and how neat comparared to BSD and Linux.
@eldersnake cool, thanks! It was a nice read, and convinced me not to try Plan9. Still, very interesting!
@anth thanks for the answer. You sure like it, and it works well for your needs!
