Matrix) as a self-hosted chat for our family was a mistake. Messages even arrive out of order now …

I’ll have to start looking for an alternative.

@movq ugh, that stinks.

I've been very happy with XMPP, personally. It's pretty straightforward to self-host. There are bridges between XMPP and a number of other services including Matrix, so there might even be a relatively painless migration path.
@movq I might have a solution for you: How about going to with Signal or Telegram? Or using one of the available matrix servers? tchncs.de / envs.net are good reliable hosts.
@movq I found a site which lists a lot of alternatives https://cellularnews.com/mobile-apps/secret-messaging-apps/ maybe something you want to look into?

OR! If you have a Synology NAS, you could host your chat app from them. Synology offers a chat application with iOS and Android app.
@abucci @carsten I’ll have a look at the current state of XMPP and that list, thanks. 👌

@prologic I have to confess, I never really had a look at Salty. 🤔 Is it ready for “prime time”? I.e., usable by non-tech users, Android and iOS client, easy upload of images and videos, … ?

@movq maybe you should ask your family what they want? Why for example is Signal not an option to you? Or Threema?
@carsten They hardly care what it is. It should just work. They’re also an WhatsApp, but I refuse to use that. 🥴

@movq if you recall, I want to try the matrix as well, spinning up a dendrite instance, and it was awful 🤦‍♂️

@movq When I quitted WhatsApp I went to Signal and this works really nice. You also have a native Desktop App and no outages so far. You can create bots for automation, which is a bit easier with Telegram, but hey, you can do that (Octoprint I hear to calling for filament change :-))

With Signal you can also donate if you like and help keep it running. For most people the stuff has to be easy. XMPP is not, Matrix is ok, but you need to create an account which is for some users a hassle, "abother account, again?" (they don't realize that Signal, Whatsapp is also an account, just their phone number is the username, but it is seamless in-transparent process to the user how it is done), Synology-Chat: You can provide credentials for them. The problem is see is, people want to share things. And when it comes to share stuff outside the eco-system, most people have bad experience or don't know how to do it as sharing to others it often hidden behind a second or even third screen tap.
