Today I switched all my working settings like bookmarks, extensions, etc from Chrome to Firefox. Now Firefox will be my main browser. I am happy to do this change. Also I am using DuckDuckGo including the iOS browser as my main browser
@antonio How are you finding it? I ended up switching from Firefox to Brave after using Firefox for years, mostly because ironically Firefox was finding ways to constantly chew up all my RAM. The other reason was just related to Mozilla, but that's a separate issue and not the fault of the browser. I suspect I'm in the minority with the RAM issues, because most people report the opposite.

@eldersnake So far so good. I haven't got any RAM issue so far. I am trying to keep the number of tabs down. I found that if I start to opening too many tabs it will get very slow.

@antonio I can only recommend to optimize your setup/tooling in such a way that you don’t relay on any fixed browser. External bookmark tools, external search engine shortcuts, stuff like that. It’s liberating. I switch between three browsers and barely notice any difference.

@antonio Ditto what @vain just said. for bookmarks i just www.saved.io, where you just add TAG.saved.io/ in front of the url you want to save or i just copy the ULR+title to some textfiles in dropbox.

@vain Thanks. I could probably make a better job with bookmarks. I use two bookmarks tools. One online for the bulk of things I bookmark for later but I still use the local bookmarks for tools I access all the time like my CI tool, my bug manager, etc. Can you tell me more about external search engine shortcuts?

@darch @vain Thanks for the suggestion on saved.io I didn't know the tool. For the bulk of my bookmarks I use raindrop.io.

@antonio @darch @vain Oh, yes, saved.io looks neat!

@antonio Re “search engine shortcuts”: A little script using something like dmenu or rofi will do the job. Basically something that allows you to type “ddg how to make bread” or “wiki Rose McIver”, which then opens DuckDuckGo or Wikipedia in your current browser. But that’s only my solution, maybe that doesn’t work for everyone. Another idea would be to simply make a little static HTML page with a couple of input forms.

@vain @antonio Yeah, I've got keywords. So, I'm trying Mojeek, but it's still a work in progress, so I can type d then tab and continue typing to get a DDG search instead, leaving Mojeek as my default. That's in Brave, but I'd imagine it's Chrome functionality.

If you like search engine or browser shortcuts you should definitely check out my other project golinks

@vain Re “search engine shortcuts” That is meat! I also like the idea of a simple html page. Simple and easy.

@jlj @vain How are you finding Mojeek? To be honest first time I heard about it.

There's also surfraw. Written by Julian Assange believe it or not. But it's a handy little CLI tool for the sort of thing you guys are talking about.

@eldersnake That reminds me I should start thinking about integrating other search API(s) directly into Spyda

@antonio @vain I like it. It's definitely now a tool in my belt, and, as I said, I'm trying to make it the first one I pick, when I don't have other requirements. On the latter, as an example, I immediately went incognito+Google+Wikipedia when I was trying to remember the Twitter storm that was Joel Osteen+Hurricane Harvey while chatting with mates; I don't think anything competes with those tools, when you can't remember anything specific -- not yet, anyway. 🤞

@antonio @jlj @vain I've been using it for a few weeks and it does its job well. (mojeek) 👌😀

I’ll give Mojeek a try. 🤔 Have used DuckDuckGo for a couple of years now. Neither of them are actively transparent on *how* they make money. At least I couldn’t find anything in ~10 minutes. I remain sceptical (of both), but hey, you can’t be sure anyway with these things, and alternatives are good. 👍~
