Nothing stops you from photocopying a physical book to give to many.
It's not bad for business. It actually gives business more exposure. The fact that you can't purchase a product without some form of DRM is down right shitty.
I'm not a connoisseur of much digital media except for games; Steam and GOG (Good Old Games). GOG distributing their products without DRM won me over as I don't have to worry about licensing or "activations" etc.
@ullarah really? Come on, I know it has been done, but it is not something that can happen as easy, and as fast, as forwarding a PDF file. No, it doesn't give the business more exposure. That's a fallacy.
@fastidious if I give you a copy of a song from this amazing band that you'll be sure to love you'll be exposed to a brand new band that you've never heard of before.
You'll also be inclined to seek out more of their music, go to their concert, buy merchandise. So to me that is more exposure from a single copied song that literally has no loss of sale or impact.
@ullarah hmm, I don't know. People are normally inclined to then getting the other songs, and albums, for free too because, "hey, I already got one, this should be an easy thing to do; why pay for something you can get for free?" Not everyone who listens to music buys associated merchandise. I speak based on my own experience, I don't. But you might have a point there, everyone is not me. :-D
I think, in the case of music, sales as we know them will cease. I don't want to own music. I would rather pay to stream it. It gives me access to immense, super high quality, music libraries any time I want it.
@fastidious I have done things in the past, primarily as a teenager 😅, that once I got a full-time job I actually went out and bought products, I got collectors editions of items. I spread the word when I had nothing and gave my support when I had the means to.
Sure, is everybody going to do that? Oh hell no. There are some people out there that will continue to obtain free products. But the point still remains that it should be easy for customers to be able to choose a non-restricted format.
@fastidious That's where you and I differ I guess and that's "okay" 👌 😅 -- Streaming services for me are utter garbage for several reasons a) I don't really get to watch or listen to the same thing I happened to like because for some random strange reason licensing agreements means it's no longer available and b) Internet services is Australia are basically fucking shithouse 😂
To illustrate point b and strike ithome, you are on a nice whopping 1Gbps (_I assume full duplex?_) -- I'm on a measly ~70/25 Mbps =>

@ullarah imagine the millions of teenagers left to do exactly what you did. And the millions that will come after them. And the adults that aren't like you. That will give you a glimpse of what I am talking about. :-)
So you're on something like ~10x better bandwidth than pretty much 98% of the population of Australia (_I kid you not!_) 🤦♂️ -- Fun fact, internally because of the infrastructure and services I provider my family, like Plex we do about ~10TB/month 😳 😂

This is precisely 💯 my point too. We (_those that legimately want to pay for, purchase and give back and would never do anything to harm or jeopardise the hard work of others_) are punished for the crimes of the few. I hate it 🤦♂️

Ain't that the truth.
