Had to deal with lots of Microsoft stuff today at work. Am now questioning my life choices. Maybe I should start living in a buddhist monastery or something. 🤔

It always amazes me just how bad Microsoft's "products" are. I actually thought Windows 95 to XP where really good, lightweight (relatively speaking) and flexible.
I got a Windows PC for gaming a whole back which is Windows 10 I think. The entire thing is just a cesspit of surveillance and adverts. But, with the added benefit, of having to pay for a closed source proprietary piece of garbage.

Why anyone would choose to use that over Linux or a Mac is beyond me. Don't get me wrong, macOS is still trash. But miles better than that Windows disaster.
@movq, you and I, mate, you and I. Often I get fed up with my career of choice, and wish—heck, long!—to do something else, something completely opposite. Luckily I don't deal with Microsoft stuff yet. Now, we are moving an entire data centre to Azure, so it is too early to count my blessings.
@markwylde Windows ME, is that you? =P
For me, Windows 10 has been really usable, and usually, they work well on pairs (WIn 95 SE, 98 SE, XP XP2, 7, 10...)
I use Win above a Mac due to the cost, I could buy 3 PC for my team with the price of a single Mac (although I really need a new Mac Mini M1 for publishing)
And now with WSL I can run Ubuntu and do a lot of stuff I did on Mac, so... Works pretty well for what I'm doing (basically Open-sourced languages and servers, and develop games)
@markwylde Windows 11 is somewhat better (cleaner) than the mess Windows 10 ended up being, 10 was still a big improvement over the ugly an unusable Windows 8, so maybe things are finally somewhat improving for Windows.
I'm obviously hoping the future will be filled with more desktop Linux and other alternative operating systems, but I'll take Windows over Mac OS any day and I don't feel like I'm ready to switch to Linux on my main machine either, as a lot of the things I have to use for university are not available for operating systems other than Windows.
@thecanine do you recommend updating to Win 11? I haven't updated due to fear of breaking my current dev environment and being kind of comfy with current Win 1 (after years of using MacOS, I have 2 years of Win10, being OK)
@eaplmx Not sure. If your machine is more Intel based* and you like the design, I'd go for it, otherwise I'd probably wait a bit longer.
*There were some AMD processors that Windows 11 had trouble running with, making it a lot slower than Windows 10 on those machines, but maybe that's already fixed.
@fastidious Azure was actually one of those things I came in contact with today. 🙈 🙊
@markwylde To be fair, Windows 95 thru XP only feel nice *today*. When I switched from Windows 3.1 to 95, it felt horribly bloated. 🤣 But hey, it was pretty good at playing videos.

@movq you felt that? I thought the switch 3.11 to 95 was a huge improvement on UI (or maybe I'm just nostalgic, it was 27 years ago)
@thecanine Thanks! It's an i7. I haven't found a strong reason to update, I think I'll stay on 10 for a while. #prayForMe
@eaplmx Yeah, that’s how I remember it. What I *think* to remember rather vividly was being stumped by that new “registry” thingy. “Why are they trying to take our good old INI files away? 😢” But you’re totally right, it was a really long time ago, so it’s quite possible that I’m mis-remembering. 😅 (Or maybe I’m projecting my today’s views/feelings on those old things …)
