I’ll have to set up an audio compressor in PulseAudio when watching movies. Yeah, yeah, the audiophiles have been advocating for this for a long time, but there is way too much dynamic range in today’s movies. For example: https://movq.de/v/76490ec1fe/tmp.EHS1nT8VpT.png I simply can’t watch that movie without headphones, because I’ll have to turn up the volume *a lot* to understand the conversations – and then the jump scares will, well, scare *my neighbors*. 🙄

@movq Yeah, those fucking sound engineers today completely suck at their job. You had ONE job!
@lyse Not sure if you’re being sarcastic. 😁 I believe this is totally intentional. “The louder the jump scare, the scarier it is”, I guess. It’s basically the opposite of the loudness wars in music. (Maybe it’s just an issue with horror movies? That’s where it’s most noticable, that’s for sure.)

@movq I'm dead serious. I know that they do this on purpose. But the end result is just terrible in my opinion. That's probably another reason why I rarely watch movies. Some people might call this extreme sound mixing art, I think it's just rubbish.
@movq I don't watch horror movies, but I experience this change in volume in other genres, too. Horror is probably much more extreme, though.
@movq is that why I have to have my sound bar up so high? 🤔

@prologic Yeah, normal dialogs are often super quiet. When you get to a more dramatic scene, volume increases – a lot. I think this can actually work quite well *if* you’re using headphones. It just adds to the drama and action of the movie. And headphones make it easier to listen to quiet sections anyway, so you don’t have to turn up the volume of your device that much. But watching those movies on normal speakers? I agree with @lyse, it’s just rubbish. I end up turning the volume knob up and down and up and down … It’s much better now with that PulseAudio plugin.

@movq Crazy! But yeah, terrible sound mixing can be often found on YouTube, too, as one comment says.
