This is becoming quite common to hear in _almost_ every fucking Youtube video!!! 🤦‍♂️

How about this?! No! Just fguck no. Why do I have to do this?! 🤦‍♂️ This is just stupid and pointless. Can we just stop this whole silly nonsense of "engagement" and "subscriber counts"?! Seriously 🤦‍♂️

Am I alone in this? 🤔

@prologic I kinda hate this too, but I understand why people do it. They're trying to make money from their YouTube channels, and this is the customary way to ask for support. I can't fault them for wanting to make money, so I try not to get too irritated and instead direct my irritation towards where I personally think it belongs: the conditions that put them in that position to begin with.
@abucci I agree, how did we end up in this awful position in the first place? 🤔 The worst part for me _I think_ is even if I did something to contribute to these artists and their creations -- Say I paid for a Youtube Premium subscription, I'd still be served ads. The whole advertising model just sucks 🤦‍♂️

@prologic yeah, it really sucks. I'm not sure how we ended up here, but I think austerity measures from governments + lack of enforcement of antitrust law, which let tech-advertising companies become enormous and powerful, hasn't helped. I'm old enough to remember how bad Microsoft was leading up to the 1990s when it was almosttttt broken up, and how much better the tech industry was--at least speaking in terms of technology--for awhile after that antitrust case against them. The enforcement of these laws is good for everyone except maybe one or two tech execs.

I mean, there ought to be many ways for people to support themselves and their work/art/videos/what have you, not just sticking ads and promotions all over everything. There's no reason to consolidate around that particular model at the exclusion of all others.
@prologic @abucci This also makes me mad. I doubt that there is a single person out there who did just that because of those monkeys telling them each and every time. Preferrably multiple times a video. They know their audience. It's one of the dumbest out there. I once saw a video where YouTubers got asked whether they actually do smash the bell and wack the like button themselves when being told. No surprise, none of them ever did.

Luckily, there are still a few channels out there who are not aggressively promoting this shit. They are rare, but they exist. I either skip forward, stop the video or just don't watch these videos anymore if it gets too overboard.
@prologic SponsorBlock has an "Engagement Reminder" category. You can configure it to automatically skip these segments.

@lyse Ugh come on, there are countless hours of free videos on Youtube, it's harmless if the people who make those videos try to make some money from what is otherwise free labor by asking us to click or subscribe. If you don't like it, yell at Youtube to pay these people so they don't have to do that.
@prologic Well... I got to start with a disclaimer, I'm a content creator and a content consumer/user.

I'm not receiving anything from my content but it would be nice. I live in a hobbyist network (creating and consuming paying with time) and in the commercial one as well. I pay for some content and don't pay for some other. I use uBlock and Vanced. I get frustrated when in groups of 'profesional' people, books and magazines are shared shamelessly. I pay for Spotify, and I download music from YouTube. I hate the first 2 minutes of ads and bumpers. I have read "Information doesn't want to be free" and I know there is a fight between everything online has to be open vs closed and paywalled.

All that said, well... The problem is deeper, comes again from the recommendation algorithms shaping our lives and that's the real danger. That's why instead of organic or automatic recommendation, they need the subscription, to avoid their channel being forgotten due to 527 videos before and short-term memory.
@prologic I agree with the last part, it happens with Spotify and some streaming platforms. You pay for it and you receive ads, like with some natazines.

I think the first step is not consuming that content, next one is to fomplain, and las part is becoming a monk and stop using digital content

@abucci No doubt, everybody can do what they want, it's their channel after all. I'm fully with you there. All I say is that "subscribe, bell, like, comment" every time is rediculously silly in my opinion.
@lyse yeah, it gets repetitive. I guess it doesn't bother me because I teach classes and also have a kid, and you get used to having to repeat yourself many, many times for the message to get across 😖
