This is one of the reasons in recent years I've refused to buy a so-called "Smart" TV.

Why I'll NEVER buy a Samsung TV (Video, Invidious)

Last TV I bought was a large flat screen that was the last of its generation without any network capability. Next to impossible to find now though, so I'd probably be going to large monitors or projectors if I needed to.

I don't need my TV to be it's own computer, especially not one riddled with spyware and adware. I can just connect my computer or media device to it instead.
@eldersnake Oh I **never ever ever** buy Smart TV(s). I always go to the shops and ask the assistant:

> Please show me the dumbest TVs you've got in stock.

My wife tells me they kind of look at my rather strangely, but I can't see their facial expression (_because I'm blind_) so 🤪

Then I buy the nicest biggest screen I can find that's basically a "Dumb TV" and plug an Apple TV in to it that basically only runs Plex 😂

@eldersnake I _actually_ finally watched the aforementioned/linked video and I **absolutely** 100%💯 agree with this guy (_whoever he is_). When I pay for a product outright, I expect to be able to use that product however I see fit. This basically applies to ***ALL** products. That is **my** expectation as a consumer, and I'm pretty sure I have consumer rights (_at least in Australia_) related to this. If I purchase a TV I expect to be able to plug whatever I want into it and I **DO NOT** expect to see ads shoved in my face thank you very much Samsung! ...

So... let's all start spreading the word, re educate the masses. Let's all boycott these companies that are doing this, or starting to think about doing this. I _think_ I've said it before and I'll say it again:

> Advertising based business models need to be banned.

#BoycottSamsung #KillSmartTVs

Louis Rossmann; I only discovered him recently myself but he's been around a while. He seems to be well known for Right to Repair advocacy and generally good logical views. He also runs free soldering and computer repair workshops. He runs a computer repair business himself but encourages everyone to learn and to be able to repair their own stuff if they can and is trying to basically create a bit of a movement. Right up my alley for sure.

And yep, well said 👌
@prologic Strange you defend Apple than, when:
-Can't even repair their shit without half of it breaking by software.
-Good luck trying to install another OS on any of it, now when it's all using M1.
-No side-loading apps that Timmy doesn't like. Literally can't even choose a browser that's not using the basic WebKit on your phone. 😂
@thecanine I don’t necessarily defend Apple per se 😁 I’ve used a variety of phones in the past, but you see for me it came down to my vision impairment. Google/Android just can’t make accessible phones for the vision impaired 😳

The same is true of macOS too. Accessibility is non-existent for Linux on Desktoo, utter trash on Windows (or super expensive 3rd party software) and so I use the only thing I can.

Basically I use macOS as a glorified Terminal with a Browser.

UNIX is my IDE.

@prologic @thecanine The accessibility thing is true. I had a completely blind friend some years back, and (unfortunately) Apple was the only really consistently good option when it came to accessibility. Quite sad this situation doesn't seem to have really improved.
@eldersnake @prologic I don't know much about that sadly, I thought Android improved in that area, but it looks like by default it still only has that shitty TalkBack thing and that's about it, unless you find and install other things yourself.
I don't even know how these things work on Apple, so I guess it's hard to compare when I don't know the other side, guess that Microsoft at least tried to somewhat improve it in Windows 10 and newer (at least according to this: https://www.google.com/amp/s/helpdeskgeek.com/windows-10/windows-10-accessibility-features-for-disabled-people/amp/ ), but if you want to get as close to pure Linux, you're probably not looking into switching to Windows.
With Linux there is so many distributions, that I'd be surprised if none of them had a good implementation, but I haven't really looked into that at any point, so I really don't know.
Also to be fair to Android, I just checked and it looks like they added at least some other stuff similar to the stuff mentioned in that article about Windows, but I'm using EMUI, rather than the pure Android and this it is probably not only based on the Android version, but also on how much the manufacturer cares about making these things work in their modification of Android. 🤔
@thecanine We should have forked this conversation btw a few Twts back... Anyway regardless...

The _issue_ with LInux on the Desktop is that there _used_ to be this great full-screen zoom accessibility software called Compiz Fusion. Sadly however Canonical™ (_god bless their freak'n souls_) ruined that by killing the project and bringing that into their Unity DE. Ever since that day, I've never been able to use Linux on Desktop....

... Not only that, since Apple introduced Retina displays with high res/dpi font rendering, I've never been able to use a non-Apple device, Computer, Tablet or Mobile device. Basically it's this reason I use Apple devices.

@prologic Yeah, I can imagine that being pretty neat for all kinds of stuff and with my current phone barely holding together at this point, I'm looking into buying a new one and seeing as Androids these days also improved their displays a lot, I guess I'll be able to find out if I'll enjoy the 120hz amoled to the point of no return or if I still think increasing the hz number past 80hz or so is an overkill. 🤔
@prologic Yeah Compiz was a great loss for everyone.

Thankfully I recently discovered Wayfire, which is basically a new modular Wayland compositor that largely implements Compiz-like plugins and effects. Just needs a bit more maturity and adoption.

I have tested it even on my old Sony Vaio laptop and it runs as smooth as butter
Wayfire: wrot, fisheye, invert and zoom plugins demo
Invidious link since their demos are sadly hosted YouTube.
@eldersnake oh cool! Does it also have full screen zoom?
@eldersnake oh cool! Does it also have full screen zoom?
@prologic Hmm, not too sure about fullscreen zoom. Is the same as enlarging everything at once, like adjusting scale or fullscreen but zoomed into and following the mouse? It seems to do the latter at the moment.
@eldersnake

> fullscreen but zoomed into and following the mouse

☝️ Exactly this is what i need! Problem is I'm not sure about the high-res/high-dpi font rendering on Linux Desktops let alone good hardware. I'm not sure I'm willing to try it per se until I see someone with a setup that works as well as a Macbook or iMac running macOS. I _wish_ I could describe/show what it's like for me.... Oh wait I can!

This is how much of the screen I can typically see at any given time, and this is the quality of the front/screen with my iMac running macOS. Notice there's no blurring or pixelation? This is what kills me on any other system 😢

@prologic Ahh gotcha 👌Yeah not too sure on the high-DPI font rendering and such on Linux, I _believe_ (and might be wrong) that GNOME 3 was one of the desktops to get closest with handling that better than the other options, but of course, that desktop environment is tied into Mutter, i.e it's own compositor etc and has none of that Compiz-like functionality. 😥
@eldersnake

> that desktop environment is tied into Mutter, i.e it’s own compositor etc and has none of that Compiz-like functionality

And there inlies the problem with "Linux on the Desktop" for me. Canonical basically fucked this up for any vision impaired person 😢 I _actually_ fucking loatheCanonicall for what they did to the COmpix Fusion project.

For context I use to be the maintainer of the Compiz Fusion ports for CRUX for a very long time (_in fact I used to be a maintainer of hundreds of useful packages_) on that LInux distro.
