I discovered something a bit sad today (maybe it's just me feeling down due to being sick)...

Either I'm computing "active users" wrong in yarnd -- Or this is just a depressing state of affairs. Or is it? 🤔 Do we care? Should we improve this? What do we make of this? cc @jlj @darch @eldersnake

Okay I've put together this Dashboard finally 😅 I've asked y'all this question once before:

> Do you mind if I scrape some metrics from your pods?

The only ones I'm interested in ar the ones starting with yarnd_server_... mostly yarnd_server_mau and yarnd_server_dau.

Let me know if you want to be excluded though! 🙃

Let's see how this trends over time...

@jlj @darch @eldersnake @prologic

what is there to be concerned about? its a small system and there hasn't been a huge push to get it out there compared to some of the push fediverse and other things get.

unfortunately most go for quantity over quality which is why it costs millions to run twitter daily and a few cents to run yarnd

i will add a pod once i settle in. but there's more out there.
@retrocrash Not sure there's anything to be concerned about 😆 -- Howecwr it would be nice to see Yarn.social continue to grow albeit slowly. Hence the work I put in today to create a Dashboard of the network.

@retrocrash Interested to hear your thoughts on "pushing" the network and what you see of as "acceptable" ?

@prologic

im the last person to ask about what's acceptable or appropriate.

however bringing awareness could come in the form of being on public social networks simply for announcements, having more github activity and interaction, finding one of countless blogs to do a q&a on or have someone review and do a tutorial on it. tons of no-to-low cost marketing techniques that avoid becoming a shitbag. :-)

also might i suggest thinking focusing on the self-hosting crowd? a well written post on reddit might stir some interest.

i know how you feel about social networks. (we both worked at one). but use their platform to pump our ecosystem.
@retrocrash Hmm interesting ideas 🤔

@prologic The numbers on yarn.social seem to be back to normal now. But for me it is very appreciated that you pull the numbers of active user from my pod. What counts as a active user?
@prologic there is only one active user on my pod lol. Someday I may invite friends and family to use it though so we will see.
@darch Any "activity" you perform (basically anytime you have an active session) you count as "active". Then every hour a background job compute the values for yarnd_server_dau and yarnd_server_mau respectively based on how many users on that pod were active today and how many were active in the last 30 days.

Also thanks, I appreciate you don't mind my collecting these two stats. It helps us collectively measure the size/growth of the network over time which is somewhat important, we _want_ it to go up over time right? 😅

But like @retrocrash reminds us, quality over quantity 😅

@abucci That would be cool! My wife and my Dad are both users of my pod 👌
