@marado The "issue" (if you will) about Twtxt / Yarn.social not being talked about as a viable alternative, is money. We simply do not have deep pockets like Twitter™ or any of the other privacy eroding pieces of garbage "social. media", so we'll always stay small and niche unless one of two things happens:
* some nice person throws money our way
* some "popular" person says, "Hey look, go join Yarn.social, it's completely decentralised and devoid of all this madness!"
😂 My $0.02 worth 😅

@marado @prologic prologic whats your opinion about the “self hosting” barrier to entry for stuff like yarn/mastodon? Even the paid service model has this problem…
@will Well now that we have a Vultr App spinning up your own Pod for either yourself or a small community of friends/family or whatever should be really easy now. We plan to rollout similar apps out to other providers too over time.
Other than this, what other opinion were you after? 😅

@prologic im super butthurt rn over the discord irc debate. people think typing a “/“ is harder than confirming your phone number & email… maybe theyre right…
@will But but but but Discord is juat a privacy eroding centralised pile of crap too no?! 🤔

@will In fairness, Discord does include features that are unavailable on IRC and the barrier to entry in mitigating that, like setting up a bouncer, is much higher than signing into Discord. @prologic is right, though. Discord is a privacy eroding centralized pile of crap. There isn't a single worthwhile, libre alternative to Discord, but a Mumble server combined with an XMPP server comes close.
@mckinley To be honest I don't even know what "problems" Discord was trying to solve? It just seems like yet another Sassy thing trying to squeeze as much money out of poor unsuspecting humans. What "technical" or "social" problems was it trying to solve? 🤔
At least we're attempting to solve (finally) a decentralised, simple to use and simple to build against (indie-web style) instant messenger with Salty.im -- We just need either funds, time or contributors or all three 😅 (its coming along...)

@prologic Discord has a highly efficient core design. IRC-like text channels and Mumble-like voice channels (+video/screen sharing), all in one hierarchy, with a good permissions system tying it all together. There's also a DM system and you can add people to a simple group chat. All of that technology was available before Discord, but I think they were the first to stitch it all together in a coherent, intuitive manner.
I used Discord for several years, but I finally broke away from it entirely about a year ago. The only Free alternative other than Matrix that comes close, at least that I know of, is Revolt. I have several gripes about the project, though, that I won't dive into right now. There won't be federation, for one.
@mckinley Okay so it has some decent UX 🤔 Maybe it has some audio thingy too 🤔 But I still find these centralized platforms basisally worthless 😂

@prologic Unfortunately there is a need in the corporate for centralized platforms to help make more money...
And from gamers using centralized platforms (iOS, Android, Xbox, Switch, Playstation) to communicate with other players in that realm.
Aaaand, I'm guilty too. I use Discord at work, and kind of like it (I hate Slack).
I have tried to use open IM, but no one (of business people, our audience, friends and family) uses them, so the network effect is strong here.
@marado The twtxt / Yarn community is still tiny, comparatively. I guess it’s *our job* to mention it … 😅
(Also, I get the impression that people have a hard(er) time understanding federated systems. It worked very well with Email back in the day, but all the newer stuff often seems to bamboozle people when I try to introduce them to it …)

@prologic For people like us, they are. But, in order to create alternatives for the general public and lift them out of the walled garden, we need to understand why so many people chose Discord in the first place.
@mckinley Great marketing? New and shiny? Great UX? 🤔
@mckinley Great marketing? New and shiny? Great UX? 🤔
I think the average person will put up with a lot of bullshit with a new app or a new website if they think there’s something on there that they want. Like if their friends are on there, or maybe some porn, or a video game, or a cat video. Period. And most importantly if they think they’re going to get a long-term use out of it. For example if they think that’s where their friends are going to be. They will commit
