@prologic I was wondering wouldn't renting pods on twt.social break decentralization? I believe it's a good idea to have a warning or something saying that for true decentralization self hosting is the way.
@adi No it wouldn't and doesn't. You have to strike a balance between promoting self-hosting and offering a fully managed service for those that either a) can't or b) don't want to.

@prologic But wouldn't a lot of pods be centralized on twt.social, wouldn't the owner of twt.social have power over all the pods hosted there?

@adi In theory, I suppose. But in practice, no. There is no "central" part. They are individually managed. There has to be a good balance (_like I said_), but even more importantly the work/effort required to manage individual communities (_pods_) has to be "divided up" and "decentralised" too. That's the responsibility of the Pod Owner/Operator.

@prologic But isn't the hosting the central part? The domain? I don't disagree with offering a service for renting pods but it's centralized, not that that's necessarily a problem as long as the person renting the pod is aware of the fact. The owner of the twt.social domain could disable the pod not only in theory but in practice also.

@adi The same is true of _any_ web hosting company. They could disable your hosting. That doesn't make it "centralised".

@adi If you want something that is immune to "takedown", "disabling hosting", "turning off servers", etc. Then I suggest looking at ScuttleButt and other similar ones (_there's a few built around this now_). But even _that_ is prone to the problem of "seizing your device", "forcing you to unlock it", etc.
I understand what you're saying, but I'm not quite sure what you're worried about? 🤔

@prologic Ah, I'm not worried about anything I'm just wondering if twtxt.net is truly decentralized or not.

@adi It isn't 😀 And if @jlj and @thewismit would continue to grow their pods to rival my own it would no longer be the only one of its size 🤣 Truth is, despite the ~300 something users/accounts on this pod, only about a ~dozen or so are actually actively used. Most have come and gone, checked it out and never returned (_for whatever reason_). So it wouldn't take much to get to the same activity levels 😉

@adi That's right. And they can. Unlike Twitter™ or Facebook™, you _cannot_ run your own. Like it's not even open source. You can hold me to this 🤗 Twt.social will always be open source, self-host(able) and encouraged to run your own (_if you can't or don't want to, we got you covered!_)

@prologic @adi With pods, you just replace the big jack with 100 mini jack prologic. 😁\n\nSolution: one person /\na self-hosted pod.

@adi @ionores Yup 🤣 The _reality_ is however that most people are "okay" with "services" where they don't have to worry about the work/effort involved in maintaining it. They prefer the convenience. The _real_ problem I'm trying to solve here though is:
> Can't we have it both way? Can't it be convenient and self-hosted, with data in your control?
And then at the end of the day, even if that's "too much" for a person or community or club or whatever, fine just sign up foo.bar. But at least we've gone to every reasonable effort to provide an open platform for all.

@prologic @adi @thewismit "... [I]f @jlj and @thewismit would continue to grow their pods to rival my own..." I'm working on it! 😆 Still only advertising in specific, mostly-closed forums for the moment; want a core of nice folks on my pod, to start. 😁
