I don’t *really* understand why the audio quality of our phones here in Germany is still so utterly terrible. Why isn’t it crystal clear? 🤔

@movq Is it actually better somewhere else in the Milky Way?
Because in reality they still use Copper to transfer the audio over vast distances 🤣

@prologic While I get the whole thing about "light speed" (lol) it still blows my mind that usa and aus can videochat etc with minimal latency. Crazy stuff. What is it 8 minutes to the sun or something? or is that mars?
@prologic Makes me wonder what year "wrong timezone" became a meaningful problem to human beings 😂
It is 8mins to the Sun yes.I _guess_ the reason video chat works across continents is a couple of factors:
* the video frame rate and quality to optimize for fast transfer of frames
* most public saas offerings are actually taking the video more locally then feed it into fast Fiber backbones
OTOH though I've had a video conference with @darch @lyse @xuu and @jlj over some self-hosted video conf setup hosted on someone's home infra and it was actually pretty decent :D

@will The invention of telegraphy and trains required a unique interpretation of time. Local times of bigger cities were used to standardize the time around the area. Later they invented more systematic time zones, so you didn't have so many of them being just a couple of minutes apart. This was all in the middle to end of the 19th century.
