A huge reason to avoid GApps on LineageOS!\n\n"… LineageOS sends similar volumes of data to Google as these proprietary Android variants, but we do not observe the LineageOS developers themselves collecting data nor pre-installed system apps other than those of Google…"\n\nSource: An LWN article about a Trinity College study (my emphasis)\n\nBtw, I find that summary to be poorly worded; one could be forgiven for assuming that the bare LineageOS install sends heaps of data to Google. I don’t think this is actually what they’re saying, having read what I think are the relevant parts of the paper. They did use GApps on their test device, and talk about how all Play Store usage is tied to a Google account.\n\nI’m not saying that the spoofing done by the Aurora Store app is bulletproof, but I do think that that configuration—which I run—gets you much closer to the /e/OS level of protection than this study implies.
