@fastidious Bit of an unfair thing to say about protocol or product X but sadly you are right, I was there as it happened ๐
-- Now IRC OTOH -- What's it's excuse? I mean I've written so many IRC servers myself, there are actually decent Web clients and even decent iOS clients. So why not just use IRC eh? ๐

@prologic the issue is on the persistence. If anyone iMessage me, I will always get it, as long as I have data, of course. But even without data, it persists, and I get it when data becomes available. With any existing iOS IRC client, communication is unreliable. Constant disconnects. IRC was not meant to be used on mobile, for what it seems. I don't blame it, it precedes mobile by a few kilometres.
@fastidious Doesn't that just mean that Instant Messaging just needs to be "offline" first? If the user isn't online, queue it up for later delivery. If you can't reach your server, redeliver it later. Wait hmmmm Isn't that email? Isn't there this whole Delta.chat thingy? ๐
The thing is I _actually_ tried it and it wanted a Username/Password to an IMAP server, so I though "Uggh" no thanks. And deleted the app ๐

@prologic Wait, Delta.chat explicitly says just that: โMessaging over emailโ. So why were you upset when it wanted to know your IMAP server? ๐ค

@movq I don't think @prologic understood Delta.chat's modus operandi (brackets my addition): "Delta.chat doesnโt have their own servers but uses the most massive and diverse open messaging system ever: the existing e-mail [IMAP] server network."
I'll answer you both ๐
a) It just feels a bit weird to me to be honest. I don't really mix what is an async fire and forget medium like Email with Instant Messaging
b) I don't access my Email via IMAP(S) I can't recall the last time I did! I use Webmail, that's it.
c) It just seems too hard at the time ๐
d) I don't know anyone that uses Delta.Chat anyway ๐

@prologic I understand your alpha ordered list points, but most of it---if not all---is irrelevant. The point @movq (and right after, me) made remains valid. The app relies on an IMAP server to work. ๐
delta chat is great and irc is great on mobile if you use thelounge as I do. Itโs seamless and has pictures and emoji and history and all the stuff people complain about irc not having. That being said I also dont know anyone who uses delta chat. ๐ญ ๐
Oh this thread is about pplโs families. Good luck ๐
@will right, but though it is excellent, thelounge runs on the web browser, and it can't be run in the background---as soon as you switch to another app from the browser you disconnect. It is not viable as a messenger app for that reason.
