The previous vanity plate on my Alfa Giulia was "NUTTYME" (as in, crazy me). This time, for an all electric car, I thought a little bit more carefully.

Tesla Model 3LR
The plate is "Imagine", for which I pay an extra fee. Dollars from such fee go to feed the hungry.
@fastidious Loool! :-D The new plate seems spot on.
@lyse hehehe. When I went to the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) to request it, they have to ask you the meaning of it, and I said it was for an electric car, you know, that runs on amps. The lady looked at me, doubting, and said "Ahh ha...". I told her that driving it made me feel as if I was high, hence "on amps" (like "on drugs"). She laughed and approved. 🤣
@fastidious Wait. How does this work? You request a plate that says “tux rocks” or something, and in order to get that you have to explain the meaning of it to a person at the DMV? And then what, can they say “no, *that* is not acceptable!”? Like … it all hinges on *your explanation*? 🤨

@movq Find that kinda strange too, since here those rules are completely different.
Here the normal plates have to have 7 random characters and the vanity ones 8 and that can never be changed. One of them also has to be a number in both cases. But than on the other hand I don't think they can deny your request, as long as it's unique and meets these requirements.

Well, you explain it, but it is up to the DMV worker to approve it or not. There is a set of guidelines/rules (and limitations) to which you must adhere.
Namely, not indecent, or vulgar words, or any play around numbers or letters to mean something indecent, or vulgar. In the case of "NUTTYME", for example, she frowned upon that it could be misconstrued as "nut tyme", you know what I mean? 😉 I almost didn't get that one, but I was polite, and seriously, and carefully, explained that it truly meant "nutty me". I must have been convincing, because I got it!

The US is a completely different country. Like, you would not believe! 😂
@fastidious I guess it's also kinda fun, having a restriction one has to work around to deserve their plate. I was always wondering if people would get "AMCAN1NE" or if it would be better to have something like "0CANINE0", especially since people here don't speak English, but sadly we don't have a word for canine in this language, it's like a two word phrase that'd be way too long an not as nice sounding. 🤔
But I'm pretty sure even you US people probably have some minimum and maximum number of characters for them, like I doubt something short like "K9" or some long drawn out nickname like "yearofthecanine" or "caninesalwayswin" would be allowed. Also the second one of those would probably also be too arrogant to put on a car. 😂
I think I first heard about vanity plates (as in completely chosen by the driver in USA and AU) when people on YouTube started to get "MAKER" number plates. Here in Germany you can opt to choose the middle two letters and the the last numbers for a fee, provided the ID has not been registered so far. The leading district letters cannot be changed. Not being a car guy I really don't care what license plate is assigned to a car. The German wikipedia article has some examples of vanity plates around the world.
@fastidious That’s kind of clever 😆
