**Some Roku Smart TVs Are Now Showing Banner Ads Over Live TV**
Some Roku smart TV owners are seeing banner ads appear over live content, according to a thread on the r/cordcutters subreddit. Ars Technica reports: [A photo posted by the Reddit user] shows a Sharp TV running Roku software and displaying an ad for a bed over a live sports broadcast, plus a prompt to 'press OK to get offer.' These ads don't seem ... ⌘ Read more
Oh boi! 🤦♂️ First Samsung now Roku. Geez fucking christ. 🤦♂️ When are we going to create consumer laws around purchasing and ownership of products? This also reminds me of the stupid shenanigans that Toyota recently tried to poul, and quickly backed down with their "Remote Start with a Key Fob that is entirely local". #PrivacyFirst

I wish you could just buy dumb TVs (PC monitors?) that can't be connected.
I dislike IoT devices. Who's fucking bright idea is it to have white goods connected? What purpose does it really have?
"Hey you can connect your toaster to the internet" ... 🤦
@ullarah I know right! 🤦♂️ I _literally_ cannot think of any _value proposition_ as to why I would want my toaster to be connected to the Internet. Seriously 😂

You'll live in the pod!, You'll eat the bugs!, You'll work in the wage cage!, You'll own nothing, but still pay for everything!, You'll be advertised to in all the products you don't own, but still paid for!, You'll consooooom the anti-suicide pills... **AND YOU'LL BE HAPPY!**
I'm obviously just joking, but I could honestly do without ads in my file manager and other such Android "system apps" the manufacturers put on your phone and don't allow you to uninstall.
I only have Dumb TVs.
Wife loves Netflix and Direct TV on an external Chromecast, what can I say?, but I prefer to store the video on a SD card an play them on the TV, or connect something by HDMI...
@eaplmx dumb TVs do not exist in the US anymore. They are just a legacy device no longer sold. But even when dumb TVs were sold, they were used like anything but TVs. We have been using cable boxes (tuners, with DVR capabilities, etc.) attached to TV's, and controlling them, since before the 1990s. Today our SmartTVs are not used as such, as least in our house. We have AppleTV pucks attached to all of them. No cable, no satellite. Everything comes to us through the tubes.
@fastidious It's what we use too -- An Apple TV -- Only difference is our use of Plex internally
