Among many tweaks, and some polishing of the web interface, Mastodon 4.5 also now supports the use of native emoji 🎁
Server owners can do more to manage and showcase their community. Mastodon 4.5 has settings to define the visibility of different feeds (timelines), and also the ability to set the default landing page to the local feed. There are also new tools for restricting problematic usernames, and improvements in the moderation interface.
The Fediverse feels more vibrant when conversations are buzzing! Mastodon 4.5 fetches replies from other servers to show you more complete conversation threads - another much-anticipated feature.
Mastodon 4.5 brings Quote Post authoring features to everyone. Note that you can manage whether or how your posts are quoted by others, both globally on the new Posting Defaults page, and individually on specific posts. You can also revoke the use of a post. In June, we proposed new Terms of Service for registered users of on our mastodon.social and mastodon.online servers. We did not do enough to consider the full impact of the terms, and the community was very clear that we needed to reconsider. We've done that over the past few months. We've experimented with both designs, and went with text above after talking with community leaders, who use quote posts positively to give underrepresented accounts more reach. In the end, we believe having the ability to opt-out of being quoted and being able to retract quotes after the fact are much stronger protections against abuse than the position of the text.=

Important note: defaults for post visibility and quotability only impact *future* posts. This means your past posts cannot be quoted. This is different from toggling profile discovery, which has an immediate impact. We're providing an early heads-up for people on these two servers (and anyone on 4.4.x elsewhere) that they can set their default visibility now, to prevent being quoted in future.=

This is all done client-side in our mobile apps (which are open source). The app knows your instance and sign up date (for your currently signed in account) because these are already part of the account data. It makes an anonymous API request to know if there is a campaign in progress. If so, the app gets some text to display. The only data collected is for the donation, if the user chooses to initiate a payment.
