Might be a bit before I can update this Pod, not because of any issue with yarnd
, but because, I **think**, my SD card must be dying in the RPi π
Getting lots of file corruption errors, the thing can't even download update archives from apt
without them becoming corrupted or incomplete lol.
@prologic Thanks mate, I should be okay, but it's nice to know the help is there if I need it π€
@prologic
> Hey mate π havenβt seen you in a while, how are things? π€
Sorry mate, I know I've been MIA a bit, and probably will be sporadic for a bit yet. My partner is really dealing with some mental health crisis stuff so naturally that keeps me a bit occupied and just been generally trying to keep my mental health okay as well, so not being online as much helps with that lol.
Void Linux with dwm on my main laptop. I have Arch Linux (also dwm) on an old ThinkPad X200 too.
@mckinley Yeah I **should** be still self-hosting them, but you're right there is an error, I need to fix it when I get my head into the game.
@prologic Will do when I get back in tonight.
@prologic very cool, I love looking at old shipwrecks
@prologic
> I actually do think this is one of the biggest problems in modern society. But of course if you actually allow too many people to have critical thinking and good education then you donβt really have anyone to manipulate and control and therefore sell all your shitty products to π
Bingo!!
I like to think of NFTs as NFWs (No F***ing Way) π
@prologic Ahh I see, well in the case of the We.Love.Privacy pod I assumed the 6 users under "monthly actives" might be the newly joined fake accounts that just joined since the start of February? As I assume that initial registration and login would count.
@prologic
> BHahaha what makes you say that? π€
All those suspiciously similar usernames that keep joining haha. And never posting. I *think* your pod gets them too, but mixed in with genuine accounts joining of course so it's not as noticeable.
@prologic I'm pretty sure at least 5 of the 6 monthly actives for We.Love.Privacy pod are not real users haha. π
Although I'd love to be wrong!
@david I agree, the latest one is pretty shameful. It feels like Lana Wachowski really didn't want to do the movie and even alluded to that with some of the meta commentary in the film.
Ohhhh we're just weeping for you Farcebook π
@prologic Not generally. Void Linux, which I'm using on this very laptop I'm typing from actually, is more akin to Arch Linux and is deliberately very hands-on. I haven't used the likes of Ubuntu in a very long time but I think those installers are a largely just a few clicks in a guided installer.
@david Unfortunately they are actually listed Out of Stock, I was looking at the 4G version initially which is in stock and didn't see the OoS banner on the 8GB model when I said that (sorry). So I guess the shortage is everywhere except for the 4GB model.
@david Ahh, didn't realise they had the PoE caps now too, that's neat.
I will for sure keep a look out, sadly for us Aussies they are going for about $134.99 at the moment π΅
Oh nevermind, just saw what @prologic recommended π
I'm not too sure admittedly on a neat and tidy all-in-one solution for powering multiple Pis, however I do know and have experience with the fact that these little beauties certainly don't _need_ a power brick and be powered by other means such as being powered off USB. The RPi 4 seems to have a requirement of 3 amps, although it can get away with around 2.5a if it's own USB ports aren't being used for anything.
I believe you can also get PoE (Power Over Ethernet) adaptors for the Pi which could also work for this application? Like this: https://www.amazon.com/UCTRONICS-PoE-Splitter-USB-C-Compliant/dp/B087F4QCTR
@prologic You know, I hadn't thought of that one. It seems simple and non-invasive, that should be fine I would think? π€
As for what to do, it's a good question π€ Something to stop the bots in the first place I guess, but things like CAPTCHA suck (and well, Google). I'm not sure how good the alternatives are either.
@prologic Yup, a bit of NFT humour, Lord of the Rings style π
@prologic Certainly a clear trend in the names when looking at the followers of Support...
@prologic Nope! Yet they also never post any spam, so I don't get why they sign up, even being robots π
π€
> Signal, **if itβs backend werenβt written in Javaβ’**
Ewwwww π
@prologic
> Not sure if Starlink satellites are in orbit around/over Australia yet, but I wouldnβt go with that option anyway due to the latency alone.
I believe it is being trialled in some places in Aus already. I will admit, I've been signed up for the beta for a while and it's _supposed_ to be coming to my area sometime in 2022, though that may be delayed due to the chip shortage stuff.
I think the latency is supposed to be 45-60ms on average, which while not as good as fixed line obviously, is leagues better than old fashioned high orbit satellite broadband which is about 600~ms.
@prologic In terms of pure outages on the ISP side I think so, yeah. Granted I don't run an entire home infra like you do and I don't monitor it as heavily, but it's a pretty reliable connection day and night. Being wireless and on a mountain where the ISP doesn't even recognise proper coverage (for standard pocket devices, my Yagi antennas no doubt helps with the coverage) there can be instances of momentary packet loss I think, but that's about it.
@prologic That truly sucks. I barely even get 5 min outages on my makeshift LTE wireless setup (not counting solar related outages), but I could excuse it if it did. The internet at your premises, it kinda beggars belief.
I don't miss the lack of 'likes' etc so much once I took a bit of a sabbatical from typical social media. I think there's an element of 're-training' needed for some of us, as those platforms have got many of us so used to a particular way of doing things and hooked on the dopamine effects.
The older style forums back in the day seemed to do okay, without reactions (before they too eventually incorporated them).
@prologic Opt in or not, I would consider this malware.
Pretty exciting stuff, can see it being a very handy addition!
@stutteringsteve I've only ever used fzf
as a file finder/opener in Vim and haven't explored it's use much outside that, but that is really cool!
@prologic haven't noticed any oddities myself yet
@prologic Thank you, Happy New Year also! π π₯³
Jeepers, some lovely CSS improvements with latest master
!
Nice new avatar @prologic although I must confess, until I opened it in a new tab at full size I thought you had started an afro or something bahahah π Until I realised it was headphones.
@prologic One of the cancers of the internet, along with Captchas etc IMO
@prologic
> Best Cat/Dog pic ever on the Internet/Yarn π
Right? Honestly a classic π
@prologic Yeah I hate to say it, but we're getting to a dangerous point in society there. I'm double-vaxxed but would never want it mandated to that level.
You're right about where the RATs are sold (everywhere). I saw them in Big W I'm pretty sure π
@prologic I wanted to say I'm surprised this was an older American politician, but then I wouldn't be surprised if Scotty from Marketing made the same error π€¦
@prologic I wanted to say I'm not surprised this was an older American politician, but then I wouldn't be surprised if Scotty from Marketing made the same error π€¦
@prologic Yep that did the trick. For now π
Yep can confirm running this branch now. Your avatar still is the default, but not sure whether you're expecting that to be fixed _yet_ or not.
Yep, Antenna is pretty handy, especially if you're finding it hard to find stuff in Geminispace.
@prologic Heh, both my pods are showing you as having a 'default' avatar now π€
My RPi for example is showing a current uptime of 40 days, so that tells you how little I've had to worry about power lol.
@prologic Yeah, just got back in so I could look at it but I know it's been down since this morning.
Well, actually the Pod itself was fine, it was one of those rare restarts needed for Pagekite I've mentioned before π
All the sun lately, I don't have to worry about the solar side of things at least!
@prologic Oh man, I didn't even realise the repo was taken down. How pathetic π€¦
@prologic Man that was awesome π
Also makes you appreciate just how much hard work goes into bashing machines into submission just to boot our basic OSes, let alone the fully fledged modern ones we're used to.
@prologic Wow, neato! I had not come across that one oddly enough π€
PageKite (the software, not the service) has been going great, besides just the very rare occasion I had to restart it to fix a connection issue, but it is rare. It's running on a Vultr instance in Sydney so latency is as good as the PageKite service had. So it's running fine but if you were interested in setting up something with gogrok
in general I would certainly test it π It's pretty trivial for me to switch/test tunnels.
@prologic Strange π€ I definitely sent it to prologic [at] shortcircuit [dot] net [dot] au
@prologic To your shortcircuit email address. I sent it from my Tutanota account so maybe got flagged as spam π€
@prologic All good! Sent the reset one to your email.
@prologic sorry, was out all evening. Yeah I'll do that. Only thing is I must admit I don't know how? π
The Dead Internet Theory (video, Invidious, 29:14 length)
Interesting video, while bits of it will seem tin foil hat or a bit sensationalist, some definite interesting angles and ideas. What also struck me, and I didn't know this before, was the part that mentions DARPA's LifeLog project. It was shut down in 2004 amid privacy concerns and backlash. Literally a month later, Facebook is launched.
Coincidence? You tell me.
@prologic
> Do these fucking Americans think theyβre the only country in the world or something? π€¦ββοΈ
Yep, ever see the movie Independence Day? The only ones ever capable of saving us from an alien invasion are 'Muricans apparently π
All I can say is the thing is flying π
I suppose on the Yarn page you could have a live (or almost live) status next to the listing, and maybe even a health status based on how long its been out, similar to whem viewing a list of Invidious instances etc.
Obvious downside is this requires AJAX/JS and extra pinging of Pods? Anyway its one idea.
Wow, this is fucking disgusting.
New default stylings are looking good π Sorry I haven't been very active or had much input. I do try check in every day to see what's happening though...
I definitely do not care for it.
What's wrong with the spinner?
@fastidious The textarea has the CSS property resize: none
on it for some reason.
Ooookay, so basically they're doing the whole cohort thing that Google is. Not exactly "thinking different"!
@prologic That's another thing I find interesting. He could have simply funded Gab. They love him over there. They too are using a fork of Mastodon I believe, except legally.
So to create his own must be about having total control over it.
And:
> If you access the Site from a mobile phone, tablet, automobile, or other electronic device, we may collect and store information such as device type, operating system version and type, unique identifiers (such as mobile advertising ID), wireless carrier, and other related information for that device.
The mobile advertising ID bit is especially bad. That one identifier can act as a total fingerprint for the likes of Googs etc.
So yes, another social platform no better than the big bads when it comes to privacy.
@prologic Yup π₯
This is a doozey too:
> You are entitled to know how we respond to "Do Not Track" browser settings. Like many other websites, we do not currently alter our practices when we receive Do Not Track signals as there is no consensus among industry participants as to what "Do Not Track" means in this context. However, you have the option to opt-out of interest-based advertising.
Even besides all that, the Privacy Policy is the same old thing - may share your information with third parties, blah blah.
@prologic
> And weβre in βStorm Seasonβ and in La NiΓ±a phase II think?) so that means lots of floods, storms and damage π€£
Got that UPS in the nick of time then!
Both my Pods updated and running A-OK π₯³
What the...? I wonder what's going on there π€
Louis Rossmann has a chat to a couple of Australians about Right to Repair and tyranny in Australia: Invidious Link
Louis was rather surprised how bad things are down here. Says a lot coming from an American!
@prologic Reading the white paper for MobileCoin here and the site in general, it _seems_ a lot better than most of the crypto stuff out there. Anyone else that reads it that sees any red flags, I'm all ears though.
Whether one actually _wants_ crypto anything in their messenger is another thing entirely though...
@prologic Interesting. What does 'opening up' mean in this context? A kind of social network cross-pollination or something? (Or whatever the appropriate term is). π
This is why if I want to read a subreddit I used something like Teddit.net as a frontend. If I absolutely HAVE to log in and want to post on something for some reason, I'll open up regular shitty Reddit in an isolated browser profile.
Good, fair, stuff. Will be interesting what their response is.
@prologic
> Was there a time when it was not? π€
Probably true. I just remember when it was the simple old interface where you simply upvoted posts/articles and there would be a community subreddit for pretty much anything or any topic.
I can't remember, however, how long they've had all the trackers and whatnot running on the webpages, probably much longer than I realise.
@prologic Reddit continues to become an absolute garbage fire the last few years.
@deebs will have to look into this MobileCoin thing to get a gauge on whether its potentially malicious or just plain annoying, but thankfully there's well known forks of Signal if worst comes to the worst that strip out unnecessary stuff.
I haven't used Signal long but I must admit I'm a convert. Also handy it can act as the default SMS app on my phone. SMS will be unencrypted of course, and Signal reminds you of as much, but it means i can just use Signal for either case
@prologic
> How you been anyway mate? π€ Youβve been quietish lately π€
Yeah sorry, I've been a bit caught up in things. I'm personally alright, just my partner has had some mental health battles lately as well as some physical ones π₯ What's also compounded the issues, is after her first jab she's had swollen lymph nodes around her neck for nearly a month and in quite a bit of discomfort and no one really knows why. I've since had my second jab and I'm fine, but she's rather regretting hers ATM...

@prologic Ahh lovely! Totally missed it, shows I'm a bit behind with it all.
Just upgraded both my pods to latest master and merged in new icons and all the new UI goodness. Nice π
Only question is... where is the Pod Management button π€ cc @prologic
@darch That's brilliant. And so true :(
