@off_grid_living It would, but I'd have to go up fairly high and renting space like that isn't cheap either. We might be in the hills, but we're also fairly close to the creek and in a bit of a dip in the hills 🤣

@movq And that's fine 😅 I just don't want any confusion over the inflexibility of macOS, I mean it's basically a UNIX OS, no matter how hard one can argue over all things Apple (App Store, various built in Aps, the Desktop Environment, etc)

@movq Yeah, good points. Interesting idea regarding your ideal smartphone. I just don't want to carry a device around with me, simply no need. :-)
@shreyan Hmm, no, I’ve lost track of Pine stuff a while ago. 🤔 Maybe I’ll have another look some day.

@prologic macOS is the standard OS for our employees. I’ve seen and used it plenty in the last 10+ years. 😅 Never as my main OS, though, because I have zero motivation to do that. 😅 What I have, works fine for me.

@movq Agree on the Smartphone ecosystem. Developing Mobile apps is just way too hard and not worth the time and effort. macOS on the other hand isn't as bad as you think (have you tried?) You really can pretty much treat it as a UNIX system (because it really is under the hood). I install and use pretty much all the standard tools and software I ever did on Linux even still to do this day and I've been UNIX as an IDE for some decades 😅

@lyse Only parts I can agree with is the expense really. There isn't anything I can't do on any of my Mac(s). It's the Smartphone market that's the biggest pain point for me, and that's not even entirely Apple's fault, its equally Google and Samsung and others. Developing apps for Mobile(s) is just not worth the effort 😢

@movq Yeah, encouraging data protection violation is on a totally different level. :-(
@movq Yes! I actually see them tomorrow at the Metfest together with three other great bands. That's gonna be awesome. I'm super hyped for Feuerschwanz, Fiddler's Green and Grailknights. I've also seen Warkings once before live and they did not disappoint either.
Haha, great story! I don't remember what my first MP3s were. Maybe some punk rock stuff? Interesting, I never heard of SuperDisk before. Do you still listen to that old file every now and then or do just keep it around for sentimental value?

@lyse Oh boy, that band *still exists*! 😅 I think some of the first MP3s I ever had in the 1990ies were from them … Short samples from their website … I wonder if I still have them.

@prologic To elaborate a bit more:
I’m a control freak and a tinkerer. Almost everything I do in the realm of computers is about understanding how it works and being able to tweak it. I rarely care about “just getting things done”.
And I’m tired of fighting. Sure, what I want to do *might be possible* on macOS or Windows or Android or whatever – but those systems are not *meant* to be used like I want to. On the other hand, Linux and BSD give me all the tools I need and they don’t get in my way (usually – OpenBSD can be quite opinionated).
Smartphones and tablets are a lost cause to me. Most manufacturers obviously hate it if the user is in control of anything, so they lock it all down. Android is the lesser evil (last time I tried it wasn’t *that hard* to write your Android app, but that was like 10 years ago) and it offers you slightly more options than iOS (simple things like settings your own ringtone …), but it’s still not something that I enjoy using.

@lyse Ya, that’s a few extra steps, though, and it’s extra-extra work if you’re not running Yarn. On Mastodon, this appears to be the norm. 🤔

I could use some healthcare right now, but corporate America sucks. You need to have a full-time job while everyone is being replaced by kiosks.
@movq Cursing liberates the soul. :-D
@movq Oweia, what a great concept… But to be fair, anybody could publish their followers here on twtxt, too. Once upon a time, I reckon yarnd did the same, but that's now fixed it appears.
Hm, so, on Mastodon, everyone can see that I’m following an account if *that account* has made their list of followers public? Do I understand correctly? 🤔 This affects *my* privacy, but someone else has control over it?

Yeah, I also hate Apple and their products with passion. These people have an evil philosophy. I'm not free to choose, they lock me in. I'm not allowed to do what I want with my devices. Similar to a lot of other companies they claim to know what's good for me, but fuck them, they clearly don't. Being infantilized pisses me off. I don't feel being taken seriously, in fact they give a shit about their customers. Apple garbage is ridiculously expensive for no reason other than to milk their fanboys. Developing for their ecosystem requires additional expensive licenses. By default they ship hopelessly outdated things like bash 3 or whatever ancient version (rival Debian or what?). They tell everyone without batting an eye that they invented cool new things, even though these invention existed for plenty of years and were made by others. Finally, the UI is just not intuitive to me. Years back I had an Android company mobile phone that sucked, but my current company iPhone is several times worse. I'm sure, @movq can put all that into better words one day. :-)
my stress level has gone down 10x today. been stressed a lot lately, but now Im much better. nothing has been wrong or anything øike that, just been stressed out. and now its only two weeks until I start my 4 week vacation, that will be super nice.
@movq Oh! When I think of tree rosin, I think of the lovely smell of pine resin. In felling season it's basically impossible to miss it in my woods. ;-) Not sure how Whiskey smells, but I think it's what you describe. :-)
Fire run here in the residential area. There is a horrible smell of house fire. The fire brigade turned around with blue lights flashing and sirens wailing. Either they picked the wrong road or they cannot reach it from that side. I don't see any smoke, but the stench is absolutely terrible. Cough, cough.
@marado Oh wow. 🤔 Let’s see how well that works in practice.
(I’d still prefer it if smartphones/tablets were more like the PC world, where installing arbitrary OSes is the norm: Nobody stops me from running a current Linux distro on my 15 year old machine. But I’m afraid that ship has sailed.)

@movq I've got good news for you, in Europe "software updates will also have to be made available for at least 5 years after retiring a product from the market".
