@abucci Let’s be optimistic and hope that that’ll have a similar effect on them than it had on Twitter. 🤞 (Yeah, it probably won’t. It probably takes an Elon Musk to ruin a platform efficiently.)
It is so scary how much we depend on YouTube. 😢

Same here. Well, it’s not a surprise in my case – I work as a sysadmin. 🤣 You usually don’t need to go to university to get hired in that field.

Well, that probably means that my README sucks. 😅

Ugh, ffs--the datasette project just added #ChatGPT garbage. Another seemingly nice piece of software and project that I need to stop using.
I guess I can be thankful they self-identify.

@shreyan I don't think VLC is suitable here either. I'm seeing if Invidious _can_ really do what I want, but I really need to figure out if I can block comments and trending from "the world".

I wonder, what's the current status of analyzing Go dependencies in general? Does one still require a diploma on that matter or got this any better in the meantime? → https://search.twtxt.net/search?q=%23jz6y7sa&t=term&f=conv&s=created&s=_id All I want to do is find out why some dependency is included, wether a certain dependency is a production or test dependency and things like that. I also see still lots of open general tickets, e.g. #46365, #42504, etc.
What tools or commands do you use?
Also, what's up with yarns? The link in @prologic's message doesn't show up in the "conversation view" in yarns (my first link). Yarns needs more love. :-)

@prologic Invidious might satisfy these requirements: https://invidious.io
It's worth noting, though, that Youtube is right now in the process of locking itself down and it might not be long before all third-party frontends stop working. Similar to what twitter and reddit are doing.
@movq Thanks! The document looked so nice, I just had to read it all. Couldn't help myself. Even though I never used anything even just this advanced after my uni maths lectures. That brought back memories.
Nice progress, the demo video is cool and promising. With that visual impression I now know what this program actually does (flying into a cluster of stars). Couldn't imagine that before.
@lyse Yeah, stagit doesn’t show binary files. 😭 I should patch that. It’s really annoying and often puts off people. If you want to enjoy the beauty, here’s a temporary link:

So far, I got a basic version of asciifield working:
https://movq.de/v/f949db49e7/MVI_6497.MOV.mp4
There are some TODOs left. Sadly, none of what I’ve done so far warrants a PDF. 😅 It was pretty straightforward. C is an amazingly portable language.
Haha, right, the CV must have been the last “serious” LaTeX document for me as well …

@prologic Why not? You told us your daughter likes programming with her dad, doesn't she? So terminal use would be a next good skill to pick up. :-)
But on a wee bit more (not much) serious note, you could probably rig something up with yt-dlp. Build a web interface or something.
@movq Could be, but we have those idiots, too. Luckily not on a regular basis, though. Mostly in the warmer season. Last trip was especially positive, that's for sure. Maybe the heat helps to keep the streets clean. :-)
@thecanine Yeah I'm not really seeing much out there that does what I need 😢

@movq Looks like your git hosting software does not allow downloading binary files (or I can't use my eyes). I was too lazy to clone the repo, so I just skimmed over the LaTeX code itself. :-)
Porting asciifield to DOS would give you a chance to document this endeavor in a (series of) LaTeX document(s). ;-)
I also love PDFs that were set with LaTeX. They just look so good. My last LaTeX use was with the beamer document class several years ago for a bunch of presentations I gave at work. I wrote a forest recreation planning software that generated LaTeX code for the personalized custodian timetables, that was in use even after my handcrafted LaTeX documents. But these days I also don't have any use cases anymore. On second thought, that very last thing must have been in fact my CV for job applications.
@lyse You don't really expect my children to use this do you? 😅

@New_scientist No it doesn't. "Google AI" has been self-promoting like this for decades. Remember when they used to brag that they could predict the onset of flu season weeks before it started? That silently went way because they got it badly wrong many times and people caught on to how bad their "predictions" actually were.
They can't stop themselves. Anything about AI coming out of big tech companies these days is marketing, not real, and certainly not science.

@New_scientist because of course they have.
Emily Bender, a computational linguistic and excellent critic of this generative AI nonsense, uses an analogy of an oil spill to characterize what is happening as a result of generative AI. It's polluting the world with false information, false images, false "academic" articles, false books. The companies that create this stuff are not cleaning up their misinformation spill; they're letting the mess spread all over. It's being used to commit crimes, and that'll only get worse. Just like an out of control oil spill will destroy entire ecosystems.
Lots of Gopher servers experience outages. I'm just glad the Gopher-Searx CGI is back.
@prologic ain’t that the truth! Modus operandi also varies from person to person. I have co-workers that never interact on public channels, where the entire team is being pinged. I am the only one “saving face” for the entire team, by actively replying to queries, and actioning as needed. It is just the way I am, too.

Pinellas County - Tempo run: 5.23 miles, 00:09:06 average pace, 00:47:37 duration
first time the garmin suggested a tempo run to me so i went with it. the run felt great. bit hard to get up to tempo on the last rep but that was mainly due to traffic.
the cool down was rough because a woman let her dogs out from the car to run to inside the house, but the dogs saw me running and crossed the street to bark. now i stopped because you never know and she yelled at them to come back. the bigger of the two ran back across and she was still yelling to get the smaller one back. but i saw oncoming traffic as the dog was starting to cross and i tried to get in the middle of the road to slow the car down. unfortunately not fast enough and the dog was hit. the driver and i waited and the owners said the dog was seemed okay but still not a pleasant experience.

I hate reading translations. Here's an example why: the same passage of the English and the Portuguese translation of the same (French) book. Not just the length of the passage shows one of the translations wasn't faithful, the behavior of the character in one version is the opposite than how he behaves on the other version...

@eapl.me work messaging/interaction is different. They are talking about the rubbish that is Discord. Enterprise messaging is work. It is very important especially whilst working remote. While at work, I have customised notifications, and yes, I almost instantly reply to queries, whether on Teams, emails, or voice (unless, of course, otherwise engaged on something else, but I multitask quite well via chat).
Checking messages once a day, and replying hours later is completely unacceptable within my work environment. It also goes against my own work ethics.
