I received the following message from our (Australian MP) Julian Simmonds yesterday via Email (because apparently politicians don't know how to use Social Media 🤦♂️ or how to write Blog posts 🤣):
message from Julian Simmonds MP
> I have been fighting for tougher rules on big tech and new laws that back Australians online. As a result of my advocacy, our government is putting in place online protections that hold social media companies to account and put the power back in the hands of parents. > > Under these new powers, social media companies will be declared as publishers, meaning they are liable for any defamatory remarks, unless they actively assist to identify anonymous trolls and resolve disputes. > > For parents who have often felt helpless, this means an avenue to unmask the troll targeting and bullying their kids online. > > This sends a strong message to those who make toxic comments and slurs online; that they cannot hide! They are no longer anonymous behind the keyboard and will face the consequences of their actions, just as they would in the real world thanks to our new legislation.
@darchGath looks like the right tool for the job here. Why can't that be used? Why do we have to build anything _event_-specific in yarnd at all? If you can link something, isn't that enough? 🤔

@<~duriny https://envs.net/~duriny/twtxt.txt> You're welcome! 🤗 We should probably tag each of the packages at some point, but it isn't clear to me when we should 🤔

@carsten Wow! 😳 At those speeds are you sure there isn't a hurricane or some kind of large storm in the area?! 😱 I mean any faster winds than that and damage will incur! 😢

Attended my first ever Homebrew Club meetup today, and it was great! Great discussions, learned a few new things along the way, and awesome to see more folks getting into (_actual sane_) decentralised / indie / self-hosted web...

#HomebrewClub#IndieWeb So far we've been talking about offline-first Text-to-Speech and Speec recognition. We also have been talking about local Media applications like MythTV and Plex.

It's available here -- if it's worth splitting out into it's own sub-package and maybe giving it a nice vanity package URI like go.yarn.social/client we can do that 👌

This is why I would never buy into Bionic Eyes to restore my own sight. Any corporate company that develops decent tech in this field, literally won't and cannot give to fucks about the patients (_who are real people_), only money and making profits for their investors.
I _feel_ like this kind of tech should be a "Human Right" and funded by the state.
The other problem of course (_and I get asked this a fair bit_) is that the current tech is pretty pathetic. The resolutions are so poor that it's not even worth it.

So... There is some thinking amongst the community that there _might_ not be a lot of technical marvel here with AWS EFS and their sub-millisecond latency at all. It _might_ very well just be a giant cache in front of EFS. Which is kinda what I was thinking too.

@david Haha nah 🤣 You are right though, we _can_ do both, but seeing stories like this from Virgin (Richard Branson's company) makes me very upset. Call me an idealist, but this is such a fucking waste of money and resources.

I can _literally_ think of better things to spend $450,000,000 ($450M) on like helping some poor African communities have _actually_ goodness to gracious clean drinking water.
Why don't we cancel the Virgin Galactic flights and worry about our own Planet and the resources and people on it before we look to the stars?
Kind regards
James (a concerns Human citizen of Planet Earth -- the only liveable plant witin light years!)

Thanks @david I was already aware of the AWS Blog Post itself, but I'm glad you linked this to me anyway on IRC, because I _actually_ "listened" to the blog post via -- As much as I don't like to rely on "Cloud Services" Amazon Polly is kind of cool here 😅

Anyone have any other details on this story from AWS with their EFS and sub-millisecond latencies? Apparently the story posted on /. was a dupe, but I can't find the original one, and was interested in reading some comments from the community. Kinda of curious to learn about the "technical" details behind this...
