"I fucking cannot stand it at all that all nuclear power plants do is boil water. The history of humanity is nothing but boiling water. In the future there will be new ways to boil water and that's it. Fuck it." — Origin unknown, most likely some XChan somewhere.
@xavavu now tell us the truth. Did you ever expected to get this much attention out of a single tag line? Isn't it amazing how simple things often catches someone attention, and then spawn a life of their own? For what is worth, your scarf lives on! And this will be my last twt relating to this scarf. Maybe.
@lyse I agree about yarn, and its usage for both, single and conversation. I rather keep twt for a singular entry, and yarn for a collection of twts on a related topic (aka conversation).
@lyse I completely agree. The "response" came across as something someone wanted to quickly write to post it somewhere for those 15 minutes of fame. The substance is on the original article.
@movq interesting, never—until now—heard of it, but that's not unusual. I checked and it came to the US last year, under the name "The Killing" and it is on Amazon Prime, to which I happen to subscribe. Adding it to my list, thanks!
It has the potential to impact negatively console players, that is PlayStation users. Since Microsoft has its own console, I am foreseeing current Blizzard games on PS will become 'second class citizens', and may eventually disappear. As someone who has played Blizzard games for 21 years, this is the end of an era.
@eaplmx well, the consolation for me is this (and I might sound a bit selfish next): I don't manage Microsoft Windows servers, someone else's does. So, though impacted, it is not directly my problem. LOL. Also, Friday is one day closer already. Yeehaw!
Microsoft is to acquire Activision Blizzard. I understand Blizzard had/has problems of their own, but this is an absolute horrible news for gamers everywhere. Like, the worse nightmare. It will give Microsoft a monopoly status on gaming.
"Fun" day at work today. It seems a recent critical update to Microsoft Windows servers (physical and virtual) is causing a few of our AD controllers to be on a boot loop. That, of course, is affecting many other services. Yup, one of those Mondays. Oh, wait, it is Tuesday already!
@eaplmx it is not the money @prologic is concerned about, it is the fact that to get a book with DRM you need to use a service provided by a company, which he considers "privacy eroding garbage". He doesn't have a problem spending money. He wants to spend it; he just wants a PDF for his money. That, sadly, isn't an option.
@thecanine I understand, but I do not go online looking for pirated books (nor software), and I doubt @prologic would doubting whether or not this that you described happened. Your twt re-affirmed my previous reply.
@prologic I think @thecanine just validated my point when he wrote 'which I can prove, even by pointing out that this very book can already be downloaded in PDF from quite a lot do “book archival sites”'.
Pretty neat! Etherpad has come a long way to look really nice, whilst being as useful as ever. Are you running their master, from git, or somewhere else? I checked out the linked instance, and couldn't find how to set the dark theme, as well as other options, which develop branch has.
@will exactly! Just jump on the "privacy eroding garbage" and be done with it. iTunes would probably be the best platform of choice for you, @prologic. I have used it, I "own" books in it, it works great.
@ullarah imagine the millions of teenagers left to do exactly what you did. And the millions that will come after them. And the adults that aren't like you. That will give you a glimpse of what I am talking about. :-)
@prologic it is intrinsic in human nature. My data is the billions of us sharing and destroying this Blue Dot. The data is the many sharing sites. Just Google it, Duckduck duck it, or Bang it (LOL), you will see. I mean, I could do a research, but I don't want to. :-P
@ullarah hmm, I don't know. People are normally inclined to then getting the other songs, and albums, for free too because, "hey, I already got one, this should be an easy thing to do; why pay for something you can get for free?" Not everyone who listens to music buys associated merchandise. I speak based on my own experience, I don't. But you might have a point there, everyone is not me. :-D

I think, in the case of music, sales as we know them will cease. I don't want to own music. I would rather pay to stream it. It gives me access to immense, super high quality, music libraries any time I want it.
@prologic, of course there is no trust, why will it be? Amazon, and Apple Books are two of the biggest. Adobe Reader would work too, as it has a way to protect the PDF, I figure.
@ullarah really? Come on, I know it has been done, but it is not something that can happen as easy, and as fast, as forwarding a PDF file. No, it doesn't give the business more exposure. That's a fallacy.
@prologic you wouldn't, but many, many many, many many many (add as many many as you can here) would. Because "stick it to the man", "knowledge ought to be free", "I am only giving it to one person!", and so on, and so forth.
@darch to define Yarn, and set it apart, those aren’t good recommendations. A single post on Yarn is called a twt. A bunch of replies to a twt is called a yarn (not capitalised). Any given twt, but a top one, can be forked into a separate yarn. The compose form has been called a post box (for now).

We are not naming things following a semantic web. We are inventing, or adapting, new terms.
@prologic from a business point of view, it is harder—or impossible?—to protect a PDF from being disseminated. Unlike a paper book, that can only be held by a person at a time, nothing stops you from giving away a PDF to many. Bad for business.
OK, it is all good. Phew! Serve me well for living on the edge. Still, I like living on the edge, so, there.
@prologic, just making sure I can still mention. Dropping a @lyse here for good measure.
@prologic it works fine now, I think. Maybe. For sure. :-D
@prologic hahahaha! OK, I am on the latest commit now.
@prologic yes, overhead power lines. Lot in Florida is reclaimed swamp, and water is just barely a metre or two from surface. Other places have it overhead too, because of legacy, and costs to bury it.
@anth thank you! I didn't know about SSH, it is out of the box, no need to install an SSH app at all. Wow! I will use your shortcuts, for sure.
@lyse having the same Golang knowledge as I have of chemistry doesn’t help, so I don’t understand much the pros and cons of the “let me render one giant string” part you talk about. For me it was mostly visual; I saw a cool, flowing, neat looking TUI, and was sold. LOL.

I bet there are many other similar libraries, each with their own pros and cons. Often picking one is, all on its own, an undertaking.
@anth excellent, looking forward to seeing that shortcut. And yes, I use Shortcuts too. They can be pretty handy.
All of the sudden I feel like eating homemade, warm, pumpkin pie. No whip cream, just the pie. Warm, crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside. Hmm, pie. 🤤
@ionores ahh, I see! I am not much into alcoholic drinks. Not even as a youngster I had much interest in them. Now, based on what I read, and because if I am to drink I like them on the sweet side, I probably would like it.
Wanting to add something else. I am sure the same happens with the Open Graph card. The Twitter card also shows the subjects, which add noise, and are irrelevant. I am not sure if you can remove those for OG, and Twitter Card purposes.
@prologic I tested it for you, and it half way works, it is just showing the raw Markdown. You need to put the rendered version, or something similar, on the metadata. I linked a screenshot on IRC, and on the issue itself.
@ionores I have never. I had to look it up, as I didn't know what it was. Have you? Most importantly, why do you ask? Looking for feedback before trying it yourself? :-)
I am with @prologic, @anth, could you share how you do it? Does it uses an specific app? Does it uses email? Share, share! :-)
@ullarah failure is not an option, soldier! :-D Yes, it has to be a way.
@prologic hmm, let’s just say I have no regrets. So, yes, I enjoyed each day very much. :-)
@ullarah only one more day left now. Where did my precious days went?!
@prologic drawer mode is when the post box moves from its original spot to be under the twt being replied to. Whilst at the top is in normal mode. :-)
@prologic images have a width and height. Avatars, that is, which are all images Yarn uses. That’s pretty much impossible for user generated content.
@prologic I wish it was unheard of! All we need here is some little rain, and the electrical power may, or may not go off. This time we got lucky, it wasn't a blown transformer, but supposedly an "[…] outage caused by fallen trees."
So, @ullarah, when using the post box on "normal" mode, that is, not "drawer mode" I can start the mention, and select with arrows, accept with return, and continue on the twt. On drawer mode, I can't select with arrows, nor accept with return, and the mention drop list doesn't go away until I click on the post box.
@ullarah no way! For me it is the opposite. It seems to me the year is going by too quick. I vividly remember seeing fireworks around here, like, "almost" yesterday, and we are already past half of the month of January. It is crazy!
@jlj might be interested on this one, Gokrazy, which is used to "deploy your Go programs as appliances to a Raspberry Pi or PC".
@<~duriny https://envs.net/~duriny/twtxt.txt> that is pretty cool! Got a link to the source? I am not sure if @darch knew about this, but now he does. @darch, @<~duriny https://envs.net/~duriny/twtxt.txt>'s script uses tools readily available on any Linux/*nix host. Check it out!
@lyse I believe he only has one, according to https://twtxt.net/twt/5ohsapq. Now, 30Kg from one beehive is a lot of honey!
@off_grid_living honey’s longevity is amazing, and it has been found to reach millennia without becoming spoiled. That linked article is pretty interesting, and while I probably wouldn’t want to eat from a 1,000 years old honey jar, it sure provides a certain assurance in case of doubt that “that old honey” we might have at home is still fine.
@lyse agreed. We should use that same approach here. It’s been used on airports already, and works well. Whether people returns the cart to get their coin back, or a hobo does it for it, the result is the same: the cart’s back where it belongs.
I don’t see any shifting either but, as twted before (#rlya64a), avatars are lazy loaded which makes, IMHO, for a poor experience.
@movq dear god! When you said it was a mess I took it lightly but now I see exactly what you meant.

Yup, it is similar on NodeJS. I am not a developer of any kind, but have used it enough to know this. Probably NodeJS is worse, but Rust seems to be competing for that second place.
A little rain, just a little—it was raining hard two hours ago, but not now—and the power goes off. I mean, what kind of third world country is this?
@eaplmx mind me asking, where in Mexico are you? Are you saying that you are having today the lowest temperature of the year, or that the lowest temperature of the year where you are has been 0°C in the past?
@movq so, how similar is it to NodeJS? I think NodeJS sits at the top of all clusterfucks. Depending on the programmer, I think Golang can be very dependency aggressive as well, ain't that right, @prologic?
@movq limes are “second class” lemons. They can be used for ‘limenades’, but can’t beat lemons for that job. Given the choice—and availability—I chose lemons 100% of the time, for everything. I specially like lemon juice on my baked or fried salmon, together with toasted garlic, salt, and pepper. Yum!
@lyse “Also looks like people didn’t bother returning their shopping carts” — This irks me to no end. Even if I have to walk from one end to the other, I always return the cart when I use one. I can’t understand being that inconsiderate. If it weren’t raining I would have moved those where they belong.
@eaplmx right, but the topic at hand is about Linux on the desktop. As a server it has to be number one now, considering all major cloud providers run on some kind of Linux derivative.

I am surprised not to see North Korea on that list—even if an old one—as North Koreans embraced Linux early on (since 1998).
@eaplmx nothing will ever happen to officer @yarn_police. It is the most correct and fair of all twtrs. Many of us will vouch for @yarn_police. I know I will. :-)
@lyse “I don’t understand why you bookmark this, but it’s okay” — I am bookmarking it as an important event. You know, like the first man to the Moon, or the discovery of the Americas. :-P
@lyse take a look at https://charm.sh/. I saw it a while ago in Hacker News, and yesterday it popped around here on a twt from Maya too. Look at Bubble Tea specifically.
@lyse yes, I understand, and those $0.02 are duly noted. The hash is still visible, though, on the lower right corner of the twt, so not really removing it completely. Not having it on the post box will eliminate confusion for non-techies, and be less prone to accidental deletions or changes. It is also cleaner and more consistent.

Let’s see what the Yarn’s Head Honcho has to say about this. :-)
@lyse zoom in the photo, my car is the third white car on the left. That’s how far I had to run across lovely puddles of water to reach it. LOL. I am at mum’s now in shorts, while t-shirt dries on the dryer.
@movq yup,?
Florida. Specifically Orlando, the place to go for all the amusement parks. This rain is the anticipation of a cold front moving in. Tomorrow we will have 4°C.
@lyse ha! Funny how they have to specifically note, “this is not a disinfectant!” I didn’t know that dispensing holy water had become automated. It is the first time I see such thing. What’s next, holy wafers dispenser? :-D
Not a black and white (or gray scaled) photo.
It rains
This is happening right now, and I wait for it to slow down to reach my car.
@lyse I am bookmarking this, and congratulations! It sure makes the experience a better one. Suffice it to say, let's not abuse it! The @yarn_police easily accommodates these days to deal with all type of things in the ever changing yarn world. ;-) :-D
@prologic it would be nice to keep it consistent. I am all for removing the subject (hash) from the post box, and having it always be a hidden input field. It makes sense even more so now, with the latest changes to the reply/fork interface, in which the post box 'follows' the twt that's being replied.
@lyse how fitting! Did he intentionally matched the beak's colour on the scarf's penguin name? I see that not only you, but the sibling is also on the creative side. I think good parenthood might have something to do with it. On the side track, that background catches my attention each and every single time I see it. It is lovely!
@lyse they wish they live happily ever after, though! I heard from a distant fourth cousin that Satoshi isn't happy. His idea of cryptocurrency was to simply recoup what he lost to the pirates, he never intended to go out of hands like it has. He weeps at the thought of the many copycats his business plan generated, and truly wants to disappear—he has kind of accomplished that, as no one sees him [much] these days.

As for his known hypothetical immense fortune, he has none. He shredded long ago that private key, and the passphrase… well, the passphrase is gone from his memory just like his bad past experiences.
@xavavu raising a near three years old child is a full time job. Really. I don't know how parents (specially mums) could do it back in the days. My mum took care of six! Not an easy feat, I am telling you, having raised two. And some people still says whilst referring to staying at home mums, "Oh, Sheila, no, she doesn't work; she is a stay at home mum". As if! 😤
@lyse hahahaha! You are fine, you are fine. Officer @yarn_police will understand! I see, you have to jump quite a few loops to make it work. I think it would be a very nice addition, and make those long twt more readable. I like a lot of your twts, because you are generous whilst writing, and I like to read.
Yes, I am with @movq. We have those here in a wide variety of colours. No less astonishing, nor less beautiful, nor less awe inspiring. And yes, they 'bleed' everywhere, it isn't just the sky: buildings, trees, roads, everything glows with the colour. It sure is a spectacle to behold!
@prologic that’s a pretty tall tower of plywood dominoes! It reminds me when we used to do the same with a couple of Jenga sets. Oh mon, I truly miss that age when they used to play! 🥲
The @yarn_police is back! Woot, we are safe, and saved! No more infractions going unpunished! Welcome back, officer, you were dearly missed! 🎉🎊
@prologic nice colours but, even if you wouldn’t have said, it looks and even ‘feels’ hot. Were there bugs too? In summer we have lots of ‘love bugs’ here.
@prologic do you think it is a good idea for avatars? For twt images, maybe, but avatars? Hmm.
Are we lazy loading the avatars? I am on mobile now so can’t check, but it looks like that’s what’s happening. On mobile, avatars show as I scroll on the timeline. Before they show, there is just a blank placeholder.
@prologic I think it is the last. It is also a stunt for a brief moment of fame. It was a imbecilic thing to do.
It just dawned to me that this is a three days weekend for me. I mean, wow! My weekend starts tomorrow, or started yesterday and I have only gone through 1/3 of it. Either way, I still have two more days off! Yippee-ki-yay!
@prologic I think that’s it. He willingly caused a mess, got suspended, and now he is back after having fixed/fixing things. The reason why he did it, according to the previous /. post, was because:
> […] The reason behind this mischief on the developer's part appears to be retaliation—against mega-corporations and commercial consumers of open-source projects who extensively rely on cost-free and community-powered software but do not, according to the developer, give back to the community […]
@prologic yes, they do Android too (which I didn't know, but it makes sense). So, they seem overall well rounded. You are welcome! Oh, and by the way, I have no direct relation with Garrett, nor his company. I just read his blog for a long time, and have seeing some of his work.
@prologic, for when the time is right, for future projects, Garret Murray, from https://karbon.agency (using the naked URL purposely) has done some very nice work on iOS.
@prologic my own website I implement a "summary card" and a "summary card with a large image", depending on what's on the yaml header (I use Hugo). For Yarn, I think the safest will be a "summary card".
@prologic not kidding. Unblock Twitter and see the developer’s page I linked so you know what I am talking about.
@prologic nope, it doesn’t render at all OK Twitter. Twitter has its own headers that need to be added.
@prologic we will gain the ability to share a link to a twt or a yarn on Twitter, and have it render nicely, just like Open Graph does in other mediums. We will gain the ability to provide exposure.
@prologic I have started following your old man, just so I can ping him. He only follow four feeds though, so he will see my replies by mere happenstance.
Very nice! If it was viable I would love some of that honey! Heck, I would be willing to pay for it. Never had honey from Australia; love the colour, bet it is yummy!
@prologic I like telling invented stories sometimes. My kids loved it, because I could come up with one on the fly. 😂
@prologic thank you! He was past 100 years old when he died. Still walked and rode a bicycle, and died fast, not lingering in a hospital bed. I wish I could live the life he lived!
More information about Twitter Cards, for reference.
We need to implement Twitter Cards on Yarn. Right now it has support for Open Graph, but missing Twitter Cards. That’s a must for sharing a twt, or a yarn on that social medium.
@xuu oh dear lord, it has started! The clock is following me. You know what that means, right? The crocodile is after me!
@markwylde so, you browse Hacker News too, right? Or Lobste.rs? Either way, yes, sadly some websites are just exactly like it—or worse! 😬
I agree. Malay pirates are the worse. I know someone—can’t recall who was at the moment, but that’s irrelevant—who told me he was once captured by one of the smallest Malay pirate ships. He was robed, of course, and then he was subject to the most abominable jokes, bundled together with the cheapest alcoholic beverages you can find in the Pacific rim, while a monkey jumped on his shoulders and head. It was torture!

He got lucky and was rescued after a week or two. He swears that, for over a month, he couldn’t understand a thing, and simply walked around with a stupid grim on his face. Luckily he snapped out of it, and got involved with cryptocurrency. Nobody knows where he is now, but it is said he goes by the name of Satoshi. Satoshi Nakamoto.
@xuu being a Xuu is the worse. They also have some crazy fixation with Tictok time! I mean, really? Haven’t they gotten a watch?! 😂
@xavavu “I knit a scarf once” — that’s a feat! To someone who has zero knitting skills (me!) that’s certainly something. I would be boasting about it with anyone I meet. “Hey, nice meeting you! Just so you know, I knit a scarf once!” I would say, whilst putting my nose up a little.
My new fixation. This honey goes well with anything, but I truly like it on a toast slightly buttered.
Raw honey
Today marks four years since grandfather died. Family has gathered to have the meal he would have liked and enjoyed, and then some.
@lyse off-topic completely, but you implemented line breaks! I believe this was not possible for you to do before, right? Anyway, very nice! 🥳 (Emoji face with party hat, blowing a party horn)
